The bird is out of the bag! We're introducing Thunderbird Pro (you already know Appointment!), a set of productivity AND privacy boosting services. And that includes...*drum roll*...an email service we're calling Thundermail. Find all the info in this excellent article:

tell us again tomorrow
I'm good with the free option myself. In fact, I'm using it to check the calendar right now.

huh, forbes.com? interesting.
I’ve been saying for a while that Mozilla should do something like this. There has to be non-shitty ways of generating revenue.
...it's 2/4.
Is it an April's Fool?
Forbes? Why not link to a PR announcement from thunderbird.net? Anyway, glad to see T-bird still chuggin' along in 2025. :)
It's an April fools? :P
Oh no... this weekend I paid for a new alternative mail provider for the next five years. That's a pity.
You are two days too late...
hosted in which country?
Does Thunderbird Pro come with a working search feature? Because that'd be a welcome improvement I would pay for.
scrolling the #forbes page crashes my #firefox tab. For real.
It's still spiraling downward, but instead of speeding up while going down this seems to be a strategy with a parachute. Congrats on that.
This error is what I get trying to read the article with Firefox on Android 🥴
Screenshot of a browser showin just an error message reading 'Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information).'
Use the reader view (not sure if it's also available for Android)

@thunderbird
I'm getting a client side error when viewing that link in Firefox. Is there a Thunderbird blog post or article I can read instead?
when will these features (and other desktop features like calendar and tasks) be available on Android?
That's a good question! I've gone ahead and passed it on to Ryan, and we'll try and get to it in our upcoming blog. As for calendar and contacts for Android, we don't have a timeline for those features at this point. Quick filters, however, HTML Signatures, and more desktop-like folders are coming this year: https://github.com/orgs/thunderbird/projects/19/views/1
whats the price?
@codewiz is this the same Mozilla that's been adding anti-privacy ad and tracking junk into Firefox, or a completely different entity which just so happens to share the name? :shiba_confused:
Quite a loaded question, isn't it? 😂

But, yes, it's now a separate entity called MZLA Technologies Corporation.

...and, no, it's wholly owned by the same Mozilla Foundation that's been adding anti-privacy junk features into Firefox:
https://blog.thunderbird.net/2020/01/thunderbirds-new-home/
It's not too clear whether donations to the new MZLA entity are earmarked exclusively for #Thunderbird development, or can be harvested by the parent organization to fund other projects.

I'd want to know because recently I've been donating to Thunderbird and I wouldn't like my donations to be redirected to #Firefox, given its current leadership and direction.
All of the donations to MZLA go to Thunderbird! You can see how we put your donations to use in our yearly updates - here is the update for 2024: https://blog.thunderbird.net/2024/10/thunderbird-annual-report-2023-2024/
Thanks. I will keep donating, please keep up the good work!
Given Mozilla's history with service offerings lately, I think I'd have to see this not being EoS'd for the next 12 months at least before I'd consider it. And I'd have to have a better understanding of how Mozilla's interest in AI training/datamining is reflected in this service. This was actually one of Google's original purposes with Gmail.
These are understandable concerns, and we'll have a blog out soon that will hopefully answer them (which we'll share here). But AI training/datamining is not on the table as part of any of the products that make up Thunderbird Pro.
