@Gentleman of Leisure 🍉🏴🚩 Generally you search groups with the ! sign instead of an @ - although it also works this way. Same as for posting. You can use the Friendica directory to find groups, as well as Lemmyverse to look for Lemmy communities - they can be followed from Friendica too, but to post in them, you more or less need a title for your posts (for Friendica groups it is not mandatory).
I've also created a small megathread of Friendica related resources if you want to get more basics (copy and paste this URL into your instance's search bar, as I have set my profile to restricted for anyone not logged into my instance):
