One idea for countering a media disinformation ecosystem that half the country can't break out of: a requirement for voting is to listen to a 1-hour pitch from each political party, near the voting site. Voting would take longer, but voters would invariably make decisions that align more with what they say they want. There should be enough overhead to make a person think. Whether we can recover enough of a democracy to pass such a change in law is the question.
