Yes, that's right, in the early days of Wikipedia there were various ideas about how Wikipedia could be made sustainable. One of them was to place advertisements. Not to make a fortune, but to be able to finance the project in the long term. After the Spanish community vehemently opposed this, the Wikipedia founders quickly rejected this approach.
