I'm glad that @delta has grown into what it is today: a real messenger alternative for the personal sphere.
#DeltaChat #ILoveFS
For some reason, I know nobody who uses deltachat directly, and it's still weird to "communicate" via mail like that with others. In my mind there's also always this "I wouldn't send them a mail" attitude... Does someone else experience something similar?
@delta
I strongly recommend using DeltaChat as a messenger and not mixing it with e-mail. In my experience, it is easier and more promising to familiarize people with #DeltaChat than to convince them to use #XMPP or #Matrix.
Im using DeltaChat with a group of people where Matrix failed.
@delta
That makes sense, but how to convice people to use delta instead of the other major messengers? I prefer using signal with most people who have it, which is certainly better than whatsapp and telegram, but what would be reason enough for people to start using deltachat?
@delta
one line of onboarding is about using shopping lists, calendar and other little tools or gaps in a chat group ... More info in last months blog post https://delta.chat/en/2025-01-23-webxdc-no-billionaires

I like that you can comment with a feeding account. More sites should do that.

The problem with webxdc is, it doesn't "solve" an issue for me, as we already have solutions for our issues. It's just that our solutions depend on big Corp, and there's not enough "urge" to switch.
@peter
fair enough! If people prefer their current set of tools even if they depend on big-corps that's fine ... Until it isn't and then you can reevaluate if delta is a good follow up. Not everyone walks away from Twitter and then X or threads or Bluesky or Gmail or Facebook etc on the same day .... But sometimes there is a rupture and thats when delta may be there for you to "just work". Cheers.

Delta Chat hat dies geteilt

this unfortunately comes across as "let them go ahead and see how it feels", somewhat threatening.

@sirjofri's question of how to bring people into alternatives is something i've been thinking about for years and i'm still not sure what to suggest. i am unable to simply say use x project instead because i don't think open-source software is generally ready for the people they're trying to convert.

many people are 'stuck' because of network effects or not even aware of the platform dynamics/implications that lead to "what is coming", and yet and i think it's important to consider them.

i'm pretty excited by @dansup's recent work on pixelfed and loops as it has somehow permeated my own friend group or follows without me telling them; even mastodon hasn't gotten to that point. this implies to me that he's done the work of figuring out how to relate to those who i described as 'stuck' and i think it's an approach worth paying attention to.

sure we as many others are very happy about pixelfed and all of the other fantastic Fediverse dynamics in so many corners 💜

We are happy with many people discovering that onboarding with #deltachat is easy ... while we are working on massive scalability to actually be able to move towards many hundreds of millions of users without incurring signal's cost and with an actually decentralized and resilient and blind transport layer. Not 100% there .. yet :)
"let them go ahead and see how it feels" is not the trajectory we intended. We rather recommend against "zealotry" and trying to heavily "convince" people into using other tools. Life realities are very different for everyone. Maybe using Gmail or WhatsApp is not the biggest problem right now for many but being afraid and needing support with money or help through buereuceacy or against repression and find healthcare is. Changing tools can be a distraction then.
A big problem I also noticed with decentralized solutions is, how to choose an instance/server. People first need to understand what this decentralization even means. My wife has a hard time to understand that she has to choose an instance to participate, and she has to understand what this federation means, if she’s limited to that single instance or can communicate with others. It’s a luxury with centralized platforms that you can just make an instragram account and participate. @delta @peter @sirjofri
yes, choosing a server upfront is tricky especially if it feels like a life-time decision. With #deltachat you can migrate with all "guaranteed encryption" chats to another server later. So the initial choice is not so important and delta offers "create profile" and "agree and continue" without asking for phone number or email. People don't even need to know it's email. It works without people knowing that is a current design guideline for our ongoing devs
I guess you're talking about some kinda "reference mail" that people don't need to know, because the "communication mail" is the address of the communication channel?

Interop and "moving" your data should be as easy as possible. It was quite easy to transfer my following list from mastodon to pleroma, as well as blocking list. Weirdly enough, it wasn't possible to transfer the bookmarks. Transferring posts would also be interesting. For delta, I guess you can just copy the mails over, and you have the encryption keys on your device?

You can read more about how it works here: https://delta.chat/en/help#how-can-i-use-a-different-e-mail-address-with-my-profile
feel free to change back and forth to try it out.
this is great. I just played Dejeweled in Delta Chat and it worked well. Took me a bit to figure out how to get it and how to access it once I opened it in the chat program though. I think a brief, visual tutorial would go a long way. Right now, no one I know uses Delta Chat but using apps on it still makes it useful and is a selling feature to get friends and family interested. #deltachat #chat #apps
I got to the App Store via a link on your blog. I want access to apps from within Delta Chat. Is it already somewhere and I’m missing it?
This is on my ipad:
Screenshot of app window with top menus and the Dejeweled app listed under my installed apps. I have drawn a plus sign on the top right with the annotation “let me add from here” and an arrow pointing to the plus sign.
