If (like me) you've despaired of the COP process recently, you might want to look at the defence mounted by Ashish Ghadiali (Radical Ecology), which focusses on the longer term contribution of the process, and (although he doesn't use this phrase) suggests we need to be careful of making the perfect the enemy of the good; I may not be totally convinced, but neither can I easily dismiss his position.
