COP 29 is a fossil fuel scam

For 30 years the UN COP Climate Conferences have failed to deliver meaningful change. They have served as a ‘talking shop’ with the big polluters given seats at the top table to cast doubt over the sciences and delay meaningful action.

This November’s #COP29 event opens under the same bad auspices of last year. A petro-state – Azerbaijan - once again assumes the COP Presidency.

Meanwhile, in Baku, both France & Argentina have withdrawn their negotiators after remarks by the COP chair.... and already the meeting is fragmenting & riven with conflicts(s).

This now look like a process that offers little meaningful to the response to the climate crisis - once the petro-states & fossil-fuel firms had got control of the process, it was always going to end up like this.

A new (effective) multilateral forum is required if global climate politics is to do any good....

Whether you look at absolute levels or per-capita carbon emissions, its fair to say that China needs to up its game if its going to make good on its claim to be heading towards a green transition.... of course, you may already be discounting such claims.

Interestingly while the US emissions remain broadly stable, due to a growing population their per capita rate is declining.

Keir Starmer will announce a stringent new climate goal for the UK today. He will pledge to cut emissions by 81% compared with 1990 levels by 2035, a target in line with the recommendations of the Climate Change Committee.

As a cynic familiar with the history of Starmer's opportunistic pledges, forgive me if I don't prematurely celebrate.

A senior official at the COP29 climate change conference in Azerbaijan appears to have used his role to arrange a meeting to discuss potential fossil fuel deals.

A secret recording shows the chief executive of Azerbaijan's COP29 team, Elnur Soltanov, discussing "investment opportunities" in the state oil and gas company with a man posing as a potential investor.

"We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed," says Soltanov.

As well as being chief executive of COP29, Soltanov is also the deputy energy minister of Azerbaijan and is on the board of Socar, Azerbaijan's state energy firm.
