Christopher Wood's The Embedded Portrait: Giotto, Giottino, Angelico (2023) is a fascinating if at times pretty dense discussion of how patrons & others found their way into religious art in C13th-14th. It includes a number of excursions away from its central concern, and while I would be hesitant to recommend it to someone just interested in the history of art, it is a thoughtful if complex & 'academic' bit of art history.
