Something I have been meaning to ask the #fediverse at large but since you brought it up I will ask you: What is the difference between having an account on a #PixelFed instance vs. just uploading photos to any other ActivityPub compatible instance? Especially if I use a generic AP client on my phone like #FediLab?

So I'm still playing and I'm not 100% on this, but it appears:

a) yea, it's just another place to post and view activitypub posts

b) the way it displays posts from the accounts you follow is different (it only displays posts with photos and videos)

c) you can only make posts that have photos and videos

d) i'm not yet sure if the posting protocol is otherwise different, with like filters and stuff. still exploring.

When I was first checking out Fediverse and related open source distributed social media, I looked at Pixelfed as an alternative to Insta... This was before the initial bird sight exodus. There just didn't seem to be many people posting and the most populous instances had relatively few members.

As I am trying to get myself back into #photography I have been wondering if I should try #PixelFed with a dedicated client or just #PixelLab, which has some support for it, though I don't know what.
