I made this to help people understand: Tariffs Are Taxes

Tariffs are taxes, on Americans, companies and individuals like you and me, whenever they buy something imported.

Look at your food, your clothes, your electronics, even your house: a huge portion is imports or made from imported materials. Plus the gasoline used to get it all to us.

#TrumpTariffs are a #tax on us.

That's exactly it. The goal is to persuade you, the everyday American, to choose an American-made product instead of (e.g.) a South African-made one, because the South African one costs at least 30% more at the point of sale/on the store shelf (and if, for some reason, you still choose to buy the SA one, that extra 30% goes straight to federal treasury, or whatever you call your national coffers in the US, I'm not sure).

And in so doing, the hope is that there will be a knock-on effect where American companies will ramp up production and reduce their wholesale prices, ultimately making American products *even cheaper* in the long run, and driving foreign products out of the country altogether because it's just not viable for them to export to you anymore.

The problems are:

1. It really is a "long run", and I think you guys will be plunged into recession long before that happens, and
2. This assumes you can find an acceptable American-made alternative to the South African-made product you used to know and love, and that it doesn't suck. :D
And of course even the locally made products have all their components and raw materials sourced within the country, so they will also go up. Or be imported subject to tariffs, so will go up.
And of course the local companies, even if it does make them cheaper than the imported ones, will raise their prices to be just a little lower than the imported ones.

you are right. And we tried this during the depression with the Smoot-Hawley tariffs which was known to have exacerbated The Great Depression and made it longer.

These #TrumpTariffs are unforced errors that are predictably and predicted to ruin things and accomplish nothing positive for the US in the short, mid or long terms.
