I put up a new fat ball feeder the other day. I thought it might be a bit too close to the house (outside the kitchen window), but the little birds seem to like it while the woodpecker hogs the original feeder that’s further away. Anyway, after emptying that one, the woodpecker is clearly not bothered by our presence at all and is also not too keen to share!

Photo taken through a window of a greater spotted woodpecker - black and white plumage rug a red rump and nape of neck - gripping onto the side of a metal feeder containing fat balls. It has a slightly open beak stuffed with suet. It is looking upwards at a blue tit that is clinging to the feeder hanging loop, hoping for a turn. A grey stone wall behind and a glimpse of trees and shrubs beyond on the right.
It's odd - after weeks of pigging out on the fat balls, the fussy little buggers have been wolfing down the mealworms and seed but not touched them. Bloody typical when I've just ordered another 150 🙄
it was over ordering on fat balls that lead to me putting this feeder up! The birds have to work harder on them than on the suet nibbles.
I've had to order more of each now. My ebay purchase list is totes boring - axes, bird food and chainsaws. 🤣
On the upside, my new houseplants just arrived 🥳
God knows where I'm going to put them all.
Managed to quickly snap the nuthatch before it was chased off by the woodpecker 🙄. I think I’d better refill the other feeder. He’s a greedy woodpecker.
Photo of an Eurasian nuthatch on the same feeder. A bird with a slate grey back and peachy-buff underside. It has a black eye stripe like a mask, leading to a sharp beak.
