I've.....been seen.

shit.
It’s generational. I hired a twenty-something not long ago, and she used exclamation points freely. Once we all got over our biases, it uplifted the tone in everyone’s communications. Seriously!

I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t know who F. Scott Fitzgerald is let alone cares what he thinks of her exclamation points.
I love the Seinfeld episode about this :)

You know, I'm not the one who uses the exclamation points. It's the darn characters. I can't help it if an exclamatory character shows up in the story. Some characters are gonna exclaim.
Fair point. And sometimes things get exciting!
The Great Gatsby (which had been a flop) only got famous after 155,000 copies of the book were given to soldiers in Europe during WWII. ( https://readersrespite.blogspot.com/2014/11/how-soldiers-of-wwii-saved-great-gatsby.html )

I once did a search for "!" in Stephen King's novel "It" and there were thousands of "!" in the book. He didn't need a wartime subsidy to sell his book.
I get this, but there's also a weird gender issue in there. I have to include exclamation points in work emails to convey enthusiasm and positivity. Something about getting down to business with a period, and people think I'm all bossy and unapproachable.
In general, I see exclamation points as a method of conveying energy onto the words.
Fun, right?!!!
