23 is the number of currently active #chatmail relays we heart about by now. Only 6 are listed at https://chatmail.at/relays to complicate ongoing state-level blocking attempts. Please keep setting up #chatmail relays -- and thanks to all the early adopters and carers!

July 2025 some key contributors will do sessions in #Lille, France at @passthesaltcon
and discuss the state of efforts to scale #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc to billions of people and bots, without any central points of control.

@passthesaltcon I've brought this up in the past, but would this be possible to package for #yunohost ?

it could go a long way to have people install and run these to help expand the network. I'd love to run one, but don't really have the chops. I'm likely not alone.

https://doc.yunohost.org/en/packaging_apps
@passthesaltcon it sure sounds like very worthwhile but there is no one we know working on it. Almost all of our efforts are community-driven and we have few funding currently so we can not just hire somebody to do it. Please be aware about the very wide breadth of our developments, covering all platforms, server deployments and a new Web-container P2P communication model. It's all done by around 10-15 active contributors and we can't go in all directions at once.
I completely understand, hopefully this can inspire someone with the skills to contribute 🤞
It was suggested but Yunohost devs did not accept as they already have a mailserver included. You can find the issue on their Github repo.
chatmail is a federated instant messaging relay more.than am email server. Chatmail relays are wholly unqualified to act as a regular email server because most email clients facilitate cleartext mail, and use the servers IMAP folders for showing an inbox. Chatmail relays only transmit end-to-end encrypted messages with metadata minimization, and constantly remove messages once received. If needed we are happy to answer any questions for people affiliated with #yunohost

Delta Chat hat dies geteilt

if I were to guess from my previous self-hosting endeavors, the problem isn't "we already have that feature", but "we can't have two mail servers on one machine, and the one we have is part of the core", i. e. technical incompatibility.

ah so yunohost offers email server by default?
k, but they are using the same server software, so it might be possible to adapt / port chatmail specifics and enable them optionally or so. But now it's not just an extra package but a modification of default installed packages.
Maybe Ynohost is a dead end but the big idea is : we need a easy way to create new chatmail server, easy like one big push button install. This is the way to get hundreds of new server ! (It's only a dream but you get the picture)

I failed to locate the exact issue but IIRC a @yunohost dev said it they already have postfix and dovecat...
@dside@mastodon.ml @opensourceopenmind yes, right out of the box:) But as you mentioned earlier, chatmail wouldn't be a replacement for the existing email server, but an addition... Not sure if that would conflict over ports etc though:(
It'd be awesome to have that on your yunohost.

im curious if there are stats about the amount of active users too
@delta

Well ... you could aggregate the number of accounts from those relays. But because the only connection between the relays are the send/received messages, there is no centram entity to know those numbers. So Beautiful!
thats what i though, despite how nice would be to have such thing for statistical purposes I guess it’s fine to focus on amount of registered relays :) cool indeed
fwiw we do have number of push notifications delivered: 12-15 million per month (400-500k per day). Two months ago it was 9-10 million per month. The numbers reflect everyone who uses and opts into Google play, iOS push notifications and uses a chatmail relay. Fdroid users, non-chatmail users, desktop-only users are not reflected in these numbers. Note that push notifications are delivered for each incoming message, so again not easy to draw user numbers from that.
@pancake

Thank you for satisfying this desire of mine 😄
- considering apns dont know the contents, but they know about the IPs and time apple/gov could correlate address with IP, privacy focused chat apps may warn or add extra security options like randomizing a delay time between notifications or group them (1 notification != 1 message). Also i assume the server wont ping the device when invalid (not encrypted) messages arrive
#chatmail servers only transmit end to end encrypted messages so there is no chance an unencrypted message triggers a notification. As to disabling all apns registration see response from bjoern and feel free to bring further discussion up in the https://support.delta.chat forum. Do you know if one can effectively hide an iOS device from apple btw?
