Not trying to be a devil's advocate but on which EU-non-dictarship were voters to decide whether they chose to engage in a war against #Russia and send half their weapons stockpile to UKrain/USrain, if not personnel as well (clear case of PL nato officers since day one)?
NONE, the media spoke, oligarchs decided, and engaged. Now they have no weapons and must pay the US for protection against a NEW enemy.
Turkish people retained a small degree of dignity not being pushed around by foreign powers dictating what they do, where to send their weapons and personnel, who to be an ally to and who to have as enemy

I am not going into the whataboutism and intricacies of geopolitical decision-making around war with you. Let me just say that I am not aware of any country in history holding a binding referendum "war yes/no?"
And then there is membership of NATO, a millitary alliance, which is a very different thing than membership of the EU, a union of nation states with the objective to have lasting peace among its members (through the single market, etc).

Obviously world politics is highly precarious all over the globe, while our planet is in a deplorable state. Any political body or construct of any scale is far, far, far from ideal.
Given the mechanics of geopolitics and realpolitik do I feel better within a EU with all my neighboring countries as allies, partners and with their populations slowly building a European common culture. Or get rid of the EU and everyone for themself again?
A single market with powerful and weak has one objective, to drain the weak and pass it to the few wealthy. This is all the EU has achieved, take existing inequalities and taking them to extremes.
Socially, ethnically, religiously, politically, the EU has only managed to increase hostility and provide grounds for a new wave of ultra-right protecting this ultimate inequality. I wouldn't call this peace, it is class war in the verge of explosion.
Yes, now you're talking hypercapitalism, a global phenomenon. And yes, EU is fullblown participant. But this is yet another topic. I am as opposed to this vile system of greed and wealth inequality as any sane person, and I see hypercapitalism as root cause for current global authoritarian trends. It is the only way that the elite power brokers can maintain status quo, while the whole population is sure to rise up to them, simply because their world crumbles around them.
The forcible kidnapping by Russian soldiers (and 'processing') of Ukrainian children is one of many warcrimes perpetuated in that conflict.
The violence and harms can be resolved today.
Im okay with Ukraine receiving weaponry to stem or undo this (and other genocidal acts levelled against civil society).
I can only hope that there is enough maturity in democracies, so that expediency and sophistry does not undermine Ukraine's right to self determination.
