Short answer? It works. Actually, it works very well.

Longer answer? Pkgsrc, like many other packaging systems, will download 10s of gigabytes just to compile "hello world". It sometimes requires very careful planning and much reading of make files to find the dependency...

I ran my own little build server for a long time based on pkgsrc+checkinstall! Works great
