Better yet, the street had previously been named after Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney, the author of the Dred Scott decision in 1857. 64 years ago on this day in 1960, 6-year old Ruby Bridges walked into the William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, escorted by 4 federal marshals and made history by becoming the first African-American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South.

Her courage and poise paved the way for the fight for Civil Rights and Justice.
