#OnThisDay, 12 Dec 1888, 20 young women petition the Governor-General of the Philippines requesting permission to learn Spanish.

At the time Spanish, the language of the colonisers, was the language of politics and society in the region. So the women were really seeking access to the wider world.

They are initially refused, with priests arguing against it, but persist until a school is, briefly, opened. http://www.fma.ph/?p=1639

Born #onthisday in 1882, Max Born was one of the fundamental figures in the development of quantum mechanics. He was a mathematician, theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate.

Among the many mind-boggling things about quantum mechanics is Born's interpretation of the wave function ψ, known as the Born Rule [1]. According to the Born rule, if the wave function of the particle has the value ψ at some point x, then the probability of finding the particle between between x and x+dx is

P(x ≤ x ≤ x+dx) = |ψ|² dx

where |ψ|² is the probability density function for the particle's location.

On this day in history. Mary Queen of Scots was born 482 years ago today on 8 December 1542 in Linlithgow Palace. There are cars parked this side of it and a set of stone stesp leads up to the right beyond the arch. The sky is blue.
