TIL Viruses called Pandoraviruses and some bacteria, were found frozen in 30,000-year-old permafrost (ground that is continually frozen) in Siberia. In 2016 there was an anthrax outbreak in Siberia that killed one person and many animals. It’s thought that permafrost melting exposed the bacteria.

TIL in 1991 a warehouse in Wisconsin holding over 4,000 tonnes of butter caught on fire. After five hours the melted butter flooded and formed a "butter river" that was 2-3 feet deep and as much as 5 feet deep in some places. The fire lasted for 8 days.

TIL that the army built a tunnel to drain Spirit Lake, to relieve water pressure against a natural dam created by the eruption of Mount St. Helens. If the tunnel fails - and it will - the dam will fail and a 40-foot wave will race down the valley, all the way to Kelso, WA, on the Columbia river.

TIL Taiwan has one of the highest oral cancer rates in the world. The cause is mainly a culturally consumed nut called Betel. Betel nuts are carcinogenic and cause a stimulating high when chewed. Mainly consumed by blue-collar and indigenous Taiwanese, the practice remains legal but discouraged.
