Following up yesterday's post: here is the same view of Varick Street by the Holland Tunnel, as seen today (Friday) at 5pm. Normally at this time my office is filled with a symphony of horns honking and traffic managers screaming at drivers. To see this and hear mostly silence at 5pm on a Friday would have been unthinkable even a week ago.

Needless to say, I am 100% sold on congestion pricing in New York City.

A photo of Varick Street in Manhattan taken from my office window, looking downtown towards the Holland Tunnel entrance three blocks away, shortly before sunset. There are a few cars waiting at a red light on the block closest to the tunnel, but the rest of the street is empty of cars.

Here's Lyft providing a great statement of Lyft's values in #bikenyc: subsidizing congestion, while also increasing #bikeshare prices, and using #citibike infrastructure to promote car trips.

Note, too, that all of the bikes in the station are #ebikes, meaning that they require a per-minute user fee.

A Citibike station on the left side of Ninth Avenue, housing about two dozen gray ebikes. Apartment and office buildings rise up in the background.

In the foreground there is a rectangular box that is part of the bike station. It houses the payment terminal and has a poster facing traffic. The poster reads:

9 Avenue & W 45 street
Hell's Kitchen
Citibike

Win for the city, win for you.

Even just $9 congestion pricing will do wonders: ~7% less traffic in Lower Manhattan, ~$1b revenue a year to fix trains & buses.

But the 75% "discount" off peak is insane, especially on weekends with free parking. That's $2.25 per car, while trains & buses are still $2.90 a ride. No discount. 🤷🏽‍♂️
