How not to report on Eastern Congo

Western media coverage of the DRC conflict is riddled with inaccuracies, oversimplifications, and racial bias—reinforcing dangerous narratives rather than informing the world.

"We can have different perspectives on the conflict and opposing theories about the geopolitics of the region, but these should be grounded on verified facts rather than sloppy coverage."

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) sits at the forefront of the climate emergency and the green energy transition. With an estimated 70% of the world’s cobalt production—a mineral indispensable to rechargeable batteries that power green energy technologies—the DRC holds a pivotal role in our global future. Despite the country’s estimated $24 trillion in natural wealth, over two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty, creating dangerous and vulnerable situations for its inhabitants. A significant portion of cobalt is mined by artisanal miners, including children, who use rudimentary tools and sometimes crawl down 100-foot-deep holes to retrieve the mineral. Both children and adults face life-threatening risks, and these mining sites, often unregulated, pose severe health threats to surrounding communities, who often face deadly repercussions for speaking out.

You should be furious at how these people went through atrocity after atrocity and still need raise tens of thousands of dollars to get away

While we are still gathering and validating the data from this year, conflicts in #Sudan, #Ukraine, #Palestine, the #DRC and elsewhere, and sudden and slow onset disasters from the Americas to the Horn of #Africa, give us no reason to believe that the number of internally displaced people will decrease from the record of 75.9 million at the end of 2023. https://reliefweb.int/report/world/rising-displacement-renewed-commitment-solutions-2025

Source: Radio Okapi, https://www.radiookapi.net/2024/12/07/actualite/sante/maladie-inconnue-panzi-la-societe-civile-invite-la-population-au-calme

{Excerpt}
