In my own experience I too find AVIF to be the better option. Though I admit it depends on the type of image. I would make the switch to AVIF for online, but Inkscape doesn't support the format and many websites don't either unfortunately. Even webp isn't fully supported and it's 14 years old. WebP is pretty close, though, and I'm glad that #GtS supports it natively.

Last I checked, #Mastodon supports uploading WebP, but then just converts it to a JPEG internally. #Ermagherd. XD

Neither of them support AVIF at all. I don't know about #snac and #honk, though.

personally I hate both of these formats, and regard them as corporate attempts to offload their bandwidth costs at the expense of consumer electronics costs!
