Why tariffs?

Not "What BS excuse is trump using to justify tariffs?"

Or "Why are tariffs bad?"

What's the real reason that trump is obsessed with them?

Is it just because it's the biggest economic stick that the executive branch can wield?

What says you?

Generate taxes.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Generate taxes, which is supposed to be a power goven to Congress.

Feeling pissed at every Democratic congress and president that added power to the executive branch along the way.
+1 for generate revenue.

Trump’s whole endgame with tariffs is to do away with income taxes altogether & replace the revenue it generated with that from tariffs, which shifts more of the tax burden to the lower and middle classes.

I agree that generating revenue is a part of it, but I also don't think he'd mind slashing taxes for the wealthy and corporations without any means to make up the lost revenue.

A big reason I think he likes them is because it's a weapon he can use - the evening stick hypothesis - to coerce other countries. We are seeing this a lot in how he's dealing with the rest of the Americas, especially.
Slashing taxes for the wealthy is why he needs to generate revenue.

He has shown perfect willingness to increase the debt too, and it's obviously all for cutting back on social programs. I think tariffs make it easier for him to slash taxes further, but I don't see it as necessary for it. If that makes sense.

At their core, all of Trump’s fiscal policies are about making sure the wealthy contribute less, while simultaneously extracting more wealth from the system. This naturally means that folks at the lower tiers and middle tiers will pay more and get less. We can see this pattern everywhere, whether it’s the ongoing enshittification of products & services, the housing crisis, runaway inflation etc., etc.

It’s late-stage capitalism, baby!
