During Trump's first term, the NYT and Washington Post seem to have led the charge against the populist movement. Those papers represent power and money, and see an outsider as a threat to power and money.

Identity politics, which these papers supported, is used to keep people divided so they can be exploited.

Now that they have lost all credibility, the old media seem to be seeking a peace treaty with populism, but a few years ago they were leading the fight against it.
