200+ Anti-Trump Demonstrators Detained After Conflicting with LAPD
February 4, 2025
"After two days in a row of protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in downtown Los Angeles, 200 people have been detained and the Los Angeles Police Department was prompted to issue dispersal orders, according to media reports Tuesday.
"LAPD officers were met with some demonstrators hurling rocks and bottles as they tried to disperse crowds in downtown on Monday night, NBC 4 reported.
"According to KCAL 9, at least 200 people were detained in a tunnel on Cesar Chavez Avenue near Union Station during the demonstrations, many were given citations and later released. It was not immediately known how many people were arrested.
"Demonstrators initially assembled Monday morning on the steps of City Hall, close to the Hollywood (101) Freeway.
"Around 11 a.m. Monday, they began marching along First and Spring streets. The group eventually made its way to the area near Crypto.com Arena, where they gathered at an intersection, waving flags and chanting. The group then made its way back north, joined by hundreds more participants and other people in vehicles who joined in the procession through downtown.
"LAPD declared #UnlawfulAssembly at around 4:45 p.m. Monday, The Los Angeles Times reported.
"The call came after officers claimed that people in the crowd began to throw bottles and rocks at them.
“They were warned, they were identified and they were advised that if they do not leave, and if they converge again and continue this illegal activity they will be cited and in some cases arrested,” said LAPD Commander Lillian Carranza told CBS 2.
"Most of the protest appeared to be peaceful, with police allowing the group to move through city streets.
"CBS 2 reported one person was arrested for alleged possession of a firearm.
"Katherine Sanchez, 18, and a senior at Burbank High School attended the protest outside Los Angels City Hall with her parents and sister. She held a sign that read, 'Ur racism won’t end our strength.'
"'It’s very heartwarming,' Sanchez, who heard about the demonstration on TikTok, told The Times.
"A motorist performed a series of spinouts as the crowd cheered near an intersection along Alameda Street as police worked to keep the protesters north of the Hollywood Freeway.
"By early afternoon, about 1,000 protesters had swarmed the Spring and Main street overpasses of the Hollywood Freeway, with police on standby to prevent them from trying to walk onto the highway — as many did on Sunday, The Times reported.
"LAPD formed skirmish lines and are working to move protesters away from the overpasses of the Hollywood Freeway during rush hour as the crowd appeared to be moving north into the Chinatown area.
"Monday’s protests were part of a coordinated series of actions nationwide dubbed '#ADayWithoutImmigrants.'
"In downtown Santa Ana, hundreds of protesters similarly gathered at Sasscer Park and across the street at the Ronald Reagan federal courthouse. About 150 residents gathered at Fifth and Ross streets to protest Trump’s immigration policies and his administration’s vow to deport thousands of people living in the United States illegally.
"The protesters held up signs saying, 'Mexicans Aren’t Going Anywhere,' and
'Don’t Bite the Hands that Feed You,' with motorists honking in support, The Times reported.
"They were led in a chant, 'It is right to rebel, Donald Trump go to hell.'
"On Fourth Street, Orange County’s historic Latino corridor, Fernanda Hernandez joined several of her friends who were protesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
"Holding a sign that read, 'My Parents Work Harder than Your President,' she told The Times, 'Trump wants us to be afraid but we can’t be.'
"Hernandez, 19, whose parents lacking permanent legal status, added, 'We need to stand up for our gente. He wants us gone, whether we’re illegal or not.'
"Organizers Tonali Un and Carla Valencia said they were social justice activists who hope to make the demonstrations a regular thing. They chose the location for the protest because it was near the federal buildings for courts and immigration services.
"'I think people are finally opening their eyes,' Un said.
"'A lot of people I talk to now regret' voting for Trump, she said. 'People are finally realizing they have to do their research.'
"Since taking office on Jan. 20, Trump has acted on his campaign promise to increase deportations, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducting raids in major cities. Immigration was a major focal point of his campaign, with Trump vowing to conduct mass deportations, expelling people in the country illegally — particularly those charged or convicted of crimes."

'We will show up at their door': #Protesters gather at Phoenix #ICE office and the Capitol
February 3, 2025
"Two protests were held in Phoenix near Monterey Park and the state Capitol on Monday, both with attendees passionate about speaking out against the policies of mass deportation enacted under President Donald Trump, joining similar protests in other parts of the country.
"Marchers from the Capitol ended up walking to Seventh and Roosevelt streets around 8 p.m., Phoenix police said. Officers were set up in a line with shields and #PepperGuns, blocking off Seventh Street in all directions, according to an Arizona Republic reporter. However, police later opened up the street, and protesters started to head back to the Capitol peacefully.
"Earlier in the day around 3:30 p.m., 150 people briefly blocked traffic on Central Avenue outside the field office of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office. Northbound traffic was blocked for about 30 minutes, first at Palm Lane, then on McDowell Road as the protesters stood in the street. Light rail trains slowed, but it did not appear service was interrupted."

"A protest against federal #AntiImmigration policies late Tuesday ended with chemical agents dispersing the crowd, according to Glendale police.
"A crowd of protesters, estimated to have over 100, mostly young participants, gathered near the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale around 5 p.m. to oppose President Donald #Trump's immigration and deportation policies. The protest started at North 93rd and West Glendale avenues, moving to 91st Avenue after police blocked off roads, and looping around the block.
"Protesters chanted sayings, like 'F Donald Trump,' and held Mexican flags and signs reading, 'My people aren't criminals, Trump is!' A few American flags were flown.
"One man was arrested for criminal traffic violations, according to Glendale police spokesperson Moroni Mendez. An Arizona Republic photographer on the scene said the man driving the car was revving its engine in support of the protest. Police searched his car and impounded it.
"The man's name was not released.
"The crowd thinned throughout the night, with the protest scheduled to end around 9 p.m. Around 9:30 p.m., Glendale police declared the remaining 100-person protest on West Glendale Avenue near Loop 101 to be unlawful. Police used a 'chemical agent' to disperse the remaining crowd, according to Mendez.
"Police were aware of the scheduled protest, Mendez said.
"Tuesday night's protest was the latest in a string of protests in Glendale and Phoenix opposing federal immigration and deportation policies.
"No arrests have been made in relation to the previous protests, Mendez said."

"Austin police later said in a statement Tuesday that two people were arrested at the protest.
"APD said the gatherings were 'mostly peaceful' but stated there was a group of 'agitators' that engaged in violent behavior, throwing rocks at police officers and driving recklessly.
"'To reiterate, the events were mostly peaceful, but unfortunately individuals who were not participants in the organized gatherings joined in and disrupted the peace. As always, APD respects our community’s right to peacefully demonstrate, however we will not tolerate behavior that puts our community and officers in danger,' the statement concluded.
"At around 1:30 p.m., a brief police pursuit happened in an attempt to apprehend a driver 'engaging in dangerous conduct', says APD, resulting in the arrest of one person for reckless driving and their vehicle being impounded. APD did not elaborate on what the 'dangerous conduct' was.
"Austin police say that the crowd dispersed at the request of the organizers, despite many people seen on camera remaining in the area.
"APD then says at around 9 p.m., the 'agitators' returned to the area and a fight broke out among those gathered, which prompted a police response. Multiple people were reportedly throwing rocks and bottles at police.
"Officers used #Pepperballs, which APD says are 'less lethal skin irritants' similar to pepper spray, in an attempt to prevent further violence.
"While the crowds dispersed, APD says one person refused to move out of the roadway, and they were arrested for pedestrian in the roadway."

"Police in riot gear moved in on protesters in downtown Los Angeles after a daylong demonstration against Trump’s #immigration policies and mass #deportations.
"The #protest, which was organized and promoted on social media, originated on the Placita Olvera on Olvera Street near DTLA and saw demonstrators on the 101 Freeway at Alameda Street blocking both sides of roadway by 12:30 p.m., causing massive gridlock.
"Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department assisted by California Highway Patrol were able to clear the freeway as protesters took to downtown surface streets, but then quickly got back on the major artery through downtown at Los Angeles Street.
"Many of the protesters were carrying signs, some of which were speaking out against Trump’s policies regarding immigration.
"'The real criminal is in the White House,' one sign read. Another read
'Jesus said ‘Love Thy Neighbor,’ not deport them.'"

"Students from multiple high schools in East Los Angeles walked out of class on Tuesday in support of #immigrants’ rights and against the Trump administration’s policies of arrest, detention and #deportation of migrant workers and their families.
"Students at Garfield High School walked out at 10:00 am and marched down Whittier Boulevard, blocking traffic. They waved Mexican flags and carried signs and banners reading '#LuchaContraTrump' [fight against Trump]. Shortly thereafter, students from Oscar De La Hoya, Esteban E. Torres, Bravo Medical and Roosevelt high schools joined the walkout.
"By 1:00 pm, the student demonstration had reached City Hall. A report by CBS News said that student protesters had breached City Hall barriers by 2:30 pm.
"The CBS News report continued:
School officials encouraged students to stay on campus for safety purposes, and to “express their views on campus.” Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho encouraged students not to stay home, and to protest “within the school facilities.”
"The student walkout coincided with a third day of protests in downtown Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security (#DHS), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and arrests of thousands of immigrant workers since Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
"Some immigrants have been detained and flown out of the US on military aircraft to countries such Columbia, Venezuela and Guatemala. While the White House is claiming that those being deported are guilty of crimes in the US, the truth is that the migrants being deported on military flights have been caught up in the ICE dragnet regardless of their immigration or legal status.
"Tuesday saw the first US flight of detained migrants to the US naval base at #GuantanamoBay, Cuba, where Trump said a prison camp for 30,000 people is being built. The flight from Fort Bliss in Texas was reported to have a dozen migrants on board, most of whom were from Venezuela and classified as 'high-value' detainees. [I warned you wall that #Trump would start using #Gitmo!]
"The Trump administration, which asserts that the migrants are affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang, will house these men in cells like those holding the 'enemy combatants' who have been jailed at Guantanamo since the administration of George W. Bush, following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The 15 detainees remaining have been held in violation of their democratic rights.
"The demonstrations on Tuesday were part of a nationwide #DayWithoutImmigrants campaign, with workers staying home and students organizing walk-outs. The campaign was initiated on social media and took place in many of the cities where ICE raids have already taken place.
"In #SeasideCalifornia, south of San Francisco, hundreds of people marched on Monday, blocking traffic on Fremont Street and Del Monte Boulevard to protest the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policies and plans for mass deportations.
"Protesters reported that on the previous day Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were spotted in Seaside and North Salinas. Many Latino-owned stores in Seaside and down the Central Coast were closed. Lupita’s Bakery on Fremont Avenue in Seaside released a statement that said, 'Our decision today was about more than just business; it was about people, unity, and standing for what is right.'"
