J20 reportbacks: Elon Musk's Nazi salute, Proud Boys roam DC, and Trump protesters deploy in DC, Orlando, and Tampa
On Jan 20 2025, Trump was inaugurated into his second (and much more dangerous) term in DC. Elon Musk gave a Nazi salute from a Presidential podium and dangerous Proud Boys thugs roamed parts of DC. Fortunately there are no reports of them finding the anti-Trump protestes. Protesters deployed against Trump in DC, Orlando FL, and Tampa FL plus a great many other cities. The much smaller numbers than in 2017 and lack of any use of force may reflect a belief that peaceful protest is not effective against hard Fascists like the current Trump team. Hopefully people are preparing other means of resistance. With luck, ICE will find many unpleasant surprises waiting for them when they attempt to assault urban neighborhoods such as Chicago where they are expected.
Note that speakers at both the Orlando and Tampa protests stressed the role of local police and sheriff's departments in implementing Trump's planned anti-migrant pogrom. This is NOT just ICE, it is bigoted, racist cops and sheriffs deputies throughout the US. Even in so-called "sanctuary cities" the cops are usually the same racist slavecatcher descendents they are everywhere else. One speaker reminded Tampa protesters that DeSantis is backing Trump by making participation in ICE's 297(g) program mandatory for all police and sheriff's departments in the state of Florida. If Trump intends to embed ICE in every activity and phase of life in the so-called "United" states, that is textbook totalitarianism, a key hallmark of capitol-F Fascism
In DC a guillotine was displayed in the march and rally, this full height French-style guillotine was even marched down the hill on 16th st from Malcolm X Park!
A guiillotine at a protest of a GOP Inauguration is a traditon that goes back to the lead banner at the 2005 Counterinaugural against GW Bush's second inauguration. It was just an image on the lead banner that year but it still made the point.
Elsewhere in DC, protesters heckled the MAGA meatheads entering the Arena to watch Trump's coronation ON TV since the ceremony was moved into the US Capitol. Meanwhile a dangerous pack of Proud Boys in their trademark black and gold/black and yellow roamed the streets. This was BEFORE Trump pardoned all but 14 J6 defendents and commuted the sentences of the remaining 14.
Since leaving the Inauguration, Trump has issued a flood of dangerous executive orders, it appears he may be trying to do as much as possible essentially by decree.

With just six days to go until J20, what I am seeing is the kind of initial fight where each side circles the other, looking for an opening.
This reminds me of the "phoney war" at the start of WWII. France and Britain declared war on Nazi Germany after the invasion of Poland but nothing happened for months as each side awaited a chance to strike. Each side feared the other was ahead in the prewar arms race.
The British didn't know the first German Me-109 fighters had wooden props and 2/3ed their intended power, or that most of the early Panzers were training models with only machine guns. The Germans didn't realize how short of their advanced Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes the British were, and overrated the Maginot Line.
In fact, many thought a second war between Germany and France would instantly stalemate not all that far from the old WWI front lines, along the Maginot and Seigfried lines near the border.
Finally the Nazis jumped off first, invading France through the Ardennes with a combined Panzer/infantry attack relying on Stukas for close air support. They went through the forest and bypassed the Maginot line, something thought impossible for tanks.
Another comparison is to two fleets of opposing sailing warships, each trying to work their way upwind of the other (get the "weather gauge") before closing to 100 yards or so to open fire.
This may be why we are seeing relatively little energy going into the J20 protests. Yes, we are protesting but this is not where it starts unless we are attacked directly and immediately. There is some risk the Proud Boys or other MAGA fash will start shit in DC on Jan 19 at or after Trump's rally, but if they are smart they won't do anything that looks bad on TV until those pardons are in the bag, possibly the following day.
This could blow in a week, or stay a phony war for months. Please everyone, be ready for either possibility. Since we benefit from delay (more time to make ready), let's not start it ourselves. Maybe we get really lucky and the civil service (AKA "deep state") folks can snap a leash on Trump's collar before he bites us all and prevent civil war entirely. Maybe not, but lets not throw that possibility away.

Blast from the Past: Resisting Trump the first 23 days of Jan 2017
This video captures the intensity of the all-out wave of protests against Trump and his agenda from Jan 1 through the post-J20 weekend. At that time, Trump was no more powerful than any other incoming President and there was still hope that protests and non-militarized rioting could shut his agenda down.
We were partially effective: the huge scene Project Veritas made about J20 and the Deploraball scared away much of Trump's inaugural spectator turnout. The remaining Trumpers were forcibly kept off the parade route by blockades of almost all the checkpoints, backing up the rest to impassability. This ruined his honeymoon and when combined with the airport protests that started days later may have delayed his Muslim ban by months.
For the first week after J20/2017 in DC, it seemed to be impossible for a protest against Trump to draw less than 1,000 people.
Now things are different: Trump blustered threats during the Uprising in 2020, and now thanks to his far greater knowledge of the levers of power may be able to carry them out.
He has threatened use of the military against protesters presumably starting at J20 itself, though that may pose logistical issues.
Women's march expects about 50,000 people not the 1 million of Jan 2017 for their Jan 18 2025 pre-Inauguration protest in DC. A Palestine protest is scheduled for J20 itself in DC. They will be at serious risk of attack, but if this does occur, the DC National Guard is nowhere near as dangerous as the IOF. Notably they cannot use air power except for recon and cannot use artillery on protesters at all.

On top of that, Trump is threatening those who investigated J6 and other political enemies with going to prison themselves. He has also made prior statements about plans to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs" whom he called "vermin." Note that he has has one prior for siccing the National Guard on protester (June 2020 during the Uprising) and one for siccing Federal cops on protesters (Portland July 2020).
Under those conditions we cannot bet on getting any arrestees at J20 protests back AT ALL.
