President #Biden backed #Israel's claim, saying it was supported by "data" he had seen from the US defence department

Israel was immediately blamed by #Hamas but the Israel Defense Forces #IDF said the blast was caused by a misfired #Palestinian militant rocket

A range of Arab countries joined Hamas in blaming Israel for the explosion, and some Arab leaders cancelled meetings with Biden

V Haaretz:
'The #Palestinian Islamic Jihad #PIJ rejected the #Israeli military #IDF spokesman's statement that a failed rocket launch by the militant group in #Gaza was the source of the explosion at Al-#Ahli #Hospital on Tuesday night, claiming that "the angle of the impact and the intensity of the fire proves that it was an attack from the air", adding that "Israel is spreading [contradicting] versions [of events]". #BBC 's intnl editor Jeremy Bowen asks #IDF 's Hagari whether he thinks the governments of #Jordan , #Egypt , #Saudi Arabia and the #UAE - which last night condemned #Israel for the hospital blast - will believe his claims.

Hagari says he hopes, following the IDF's analysis, that "the BBC will now share this investigation and those countries will listen".

He adds that the IDF intends to share the analysis with the US - and any other country that wants to see it.

#CNN reporter asks why the media should believe the #IDF 's claims, using an example of the #Israeli government once blaming #Palestinian militants for the death of the journalist #Shireen Abu #Aqla
He says it's now known this isn't true.
Responding, Hagari admits #Israel has, in the past, been "fast to go to conclusions".

But he says after the hospital blast, officials "took their time" because they wanted to "double check" they had all the facts right.

Hagari says if the #IDF was responsible for the blast there would have been a "crater" or some "structural damage".

Showing a diagram of the ( #Ahli ) #hospital, he says there is no such damage - "the walls stay intact".

He says this is because the blast was caused by an Islamic Jihad #PIJ rocket, which "failed to launch" properly and was "misfired".

As a reminder, #Hamas and #Palestinian authorities have blamed #Israel for the blast at the hospital

#IDF Hagari continues, saying #Hamas understood the blast was caused by a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket, but launched a "global media campaign" to blame #Israel

"They went as far as inflating the numbers of casualties," he says. "They understood with absolute certainty that it was a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihad that damaged the ( #Ahli ) #hospital ."

He says aerial footage confirms there was no direct hit to the hospital itself and there was no damage to nearby buildings.

#IDF 's Daniel Hagari says the #Israeli military has concluded the #Palestinian Islamic Jihad #PIJ group was responsible for the Al #Ahli #hospital blast.

He says a barrage of rockets were fired by #Hamas to #Israel at 18:15 local time on Tuesday - before the hospital blast.

Then, at 18:59, he says a barage of around 10 rockets was fired by PiJ from a nearby cemetery. At the same time, there were reports of an explosion at the hospital in #Gaza City, he says.

#IDF spox Conricus says 600,000 #Palestinians have made "the smart and self-preservatory" decision to move south (ahead of its expected ground offensive).

But, he goes on "still a few hundred thousand that need to - and should - go".

Conricus claims #Hamas - which told people to stay put - had a "delaying effect" on people leaving the area, but he is confident that the more time goes on, the more the militant group will stop using "its own civilians as human shields"

Reuters is just reporting that the #US, #Israel and #Egypt have agreed to a #ceasefire in southern #Gaza to coincide with the reopening of the #Rafah crossing on the Gaza-Egypt border. We had earlier seen media reports saying the Egyptian-controlled Rafah crossing - now the only possible road out of Gaza - will be open "for a few hours" on Monday
#IDF spox on air just now with #BBCWorldService didn't seem to have any knowledge of any such agreement

#IDF spox said they estimate some 500,000 people have left northern #Gaza so far and accused #Hamas of making it difficult for those trying to move south.
Asked about a bombing on Friday which killed a reported 70 people on a road identified as safe by the Israeli army, Conricus repeated that IDF does not actively target civilians.

But at one point during the briefing he appeared to acknowledge that the 'nature of the operation' means it’s 'not always possible to avoid civilian casualties.'

V #BBC def corr Jonathan Beale:
#IDF have been displaying some of the WEAPONS from the #Hamas attack. #Israel said the militants had brought more than 1,000 with them when they crossed the border, incl some thermobaric bombs (which was said to have been used to burn out buildings and incinerate those inside), a few Soviet-era Strela shoulder-launched missiles and a couple of shoulder-launched rockets, which appeared to have Nato stockpile numbers written on the side.

V Haaretz:

V #BBC Hugo Bachega in S. Lebanon:
'The arm of the #Palestinian militant group -
#Hamas in #Lebanon - has confirmed that three of its members were killed while infiltrating #Israel from southern Lebanon early on Saturday.

It said the men were “able… to blow up the border fence” and “target the surveillance and access checkpoint” near the Israeli village of #Margaliot

On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces #IDF said it had killed “from the air” three “terrorists” in that area.'

Thousands of #Palestinians are continuing to flee northern #Gaza ahead of #Israel's expected ground offensive.

In its latest update the #IDF says civilians still in northern Gaza must head south between 10:00 and 13:00 local time.

They should use a single route running from Beit Hanoun towards Khan Yunis, it says, adding that it will not target the route during those hours.

Initially, a 24-hour evacuation window was set by Israel for people to flee the area.

There's been a protest outside #Israel’s def min by families demanding more information about those missing and the #hostages held by #Hamas.

Some there believed the area around #Gaza was left unprotected because troops had been deployed to the occupied West Bank by the hardline, ultranationalist govt of Netanyahu.

"The #IDF is supposed to defend us, not to secure some crazy adventure of settlers which only harm the security of Israel and the security of its soldiers" a participant said

It has just passed 7.30 AM in the Midde East - you might have missed some of the following:

" #IDF is gearing up for a comprehensive offensive" with the help of hundreds of thousands of reserve personnel, its stmt says.

No timings were given. A ground offensive into the #Gaza Strip has been expected and #Israel has asked residents in the north to flee.

It says they plan an offensive "involving air, sea, and land" forces.

#Israel 's army says it's launched localised raids inside #Gaza, as the #IDF puts it, "to eliminate the threat of terrorist cells and infrastructure".

#IDF entered #Gaza to search for hostages - #Israeli Airforce

The Israeli Airforce acct posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that over the last 24 hours the Israeli Army carried out "local raids" in the territory of the Gaza Strip. The post says:

'several high-level consultations took place on Friday night to try to understand what the new intelligence meant. #IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Shin Bet director Ronen Bar and Aharon Haliva, head of military intelligence, participated in some of these consultations.'

On the #hostages v i24news:
' #IDF has notified the families of 120 hostages being held by #Hamas in the #Gaza Strip'

Would it refer to #Israeli soldiers being kept as hostages?

Previously there was talk of about 150 people altogether taken from #Israel

"You will be able to return to Gaza City only when another announcement permitting it is made," Israeli officials said in the statement to Gaza residents.

The #evacuation order is part of #Israel 's "humanitarian measures" in the #Gaza Strip, says #IDF spox Jonathan Conricus:"Civilians are not our enemy."

He said the military wants to minimise civilian casualties as it strikes targets in the Gaza Strip, and that it remains fully committed to the laws of international armed conflict.

Milo described how the #Gaza Border community's security teams "have fought bravely," noting especially the female fighters and commanders' role in stopping #Hamas militants. They have all "demonstrated extraordinary fighting skills - If anyone had any other thoughts, I think what happened leaves no doubt about the combat capabilities of the #IDF female fighters."

Milo stressed that his command's current main task is the #evacuation of residents who are still in the Gaza-Border communities

V Haaretz:
#Israel 's Home Front Command Commander Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo said 'that the #IDF is focused on defending civilians and killing terrorists. Milo added that the command is working with local authorities and that he discovered "shock and a big break in their trust in us" – along with what he called "a very big realisation and understanding that we must stand up and help the residents. There's no doubt that any breach of trust requires time to heal."

And here's another line from the #Israeli military update - #IDF spox Jonathan Conricus says that #Hamas militants did behead babies during their deadly wave of attacks at the weekend.

Conricus says a coroner who visited the aftermath of the massacre at Kibbutz Be'eri had seen the children's bodies and confirmed how they died.

#Israel 's military #IDF says its latest air strikes in #Gaza are aiming to destroy a network of #tunnels that has for decades served as an operations centre for #Hamas , built over the years since Hamas took power in Gaza in 2007

"The Israeli Air Force has been striking a lot of neighbourhoods in Gaza. What we are doing is prioritising striking commanders, senior leaders of Hamas in all echelons," an IDF spox said.

"Whatever it is, if it belongs to Hamas, we are striking it."

A military spokesman told AFP it appeared to have been mortar fire.
