A dragonfly sits on a wooden surface. Its abdomen is blue, except at the tail end where it is black. the thorax is dark brown and the eyes are a very dark green. The wings are held stretched out at 90 degrees from the body and are long relative to the size of the dragonfly, the wingspan being considerably longer than the head to tail length.

There are also some more subtle but specific & reliable differences if you know what to look for. On the second segment of its abdomen is a black mark in a complicated shape, often described as looking like the traditional symbol for mercury. This shape would be less complex if it were one of the common species - a u shape for Azure Damselfly and a round blob for Common Blue.

Violet Dropwing doesn't occur in the UK - this was in #Rome in 2016 at the Villa Ada park. They also mate in flight, during which they're joined into a circle, with the female flying upside down and backwards. It's quite a sight.
