🧵 1/2 The ruin of the compressor room of an oil mine in France, the Carreau Clemenceau in Pechelbronn in Alsace. During the pandemic, I had the honour of being given a private tour for an article (The site is closed except for museum events and group tours. It is the extension of the national petroleum museum). A big industrial window between walls of red bricks shows the inside of a vast roofless hall. Green plants like ivy, brambles, and even small trees proliferate on the walls and inside. On the opposite wall, big iron constructions are still visible, completely rusted. The buildings date from the First World War, when the Germans extracted the oil from oil sands for their war machine. They had occupied Alsace at the time and Alsatian workers had to labour here to supply power for weapons, which were also directed against their own families in France.
