Folklore from 19th century Crete:

A caterpillar infestation hit the vineyards one year. When all else failed, people formally summoned the caterpillars to court, threatening them with legal prosecution.
When that failed too, women exposed themselves in the vineyards, hoping that the caterpillars would be so scandalized they would leave on their own.

Organic agriculture. No pesticides.

#folklore
do we know if the women's plan worked?
it was claimed to be an effective method so who knows
so I learned something unexpected about caterpillars today 🙂
Thank you!
For whatever reason, I feel like this was a cover story for something else entirely.

I kinda love the idea that this was women trolling men, or banding together to back a cover story about why some woman flashed someone in a way "proper" society didn't like. "Oh no, she was just....scaring off caterpillars" "uh, yeah, it's a time honored tradition. We'll prove it..."(Quickly thinks about how long until the caterpillars cacoon)"...in another week!"
But then did the caterpillars magically turn into butterflies and fly away?
I hope it was moths tbh
As I read I was trying my best not to think of ancient murals because later-age Cretans deserve an identity separate from long-ago residents and THEN the story went there and brain went TITTY LADIES
that's something I haven't tried in the garden! 😄
