Matthew Meyer's new yokai book has a fascinating tale about a fisherman who married a mermaid.

When the couple ran into financial trouble the mermaid wanted to work as a courtesan but wasn't very good at it. Then they remembered that eating mermaid flesh is said to grant immortality. Not wanting to actually sell flesh, the couple opened a "Mermaid Licking Shop" instead where people could lick the mermaid for a few extra healthy years.

They grew rich and lived happily ever after.

#folklore 🧜‍♀️
This is surprisingly wholesome xD also reminds me of I think either a geisha or a Roppongi hostess who had a well-paying client with a fetish for licking her hand. She found it unpleasant, but hey, money is money. (I'm guessing hostess because I tend to think geisha and their clientele are/were governed by more elaborate rules of propriety, but who knows what went on at the edges.)
Yeah I don't doubt that "come lick my wife and win a few extra lives" would also be a lucrative business today :D
Musk is going to be all over this.
Haha ! 人魚を舐める . Sounds like some sort of perverse kotowaza. @mikako6 - what do you think?
It's a great kotowaza for situations where everyone knows what's going on but also wants to try just a little bit.
OK I'm gonna add that Meyer cites a source, and 18th century book that elaborates on the legend of Urashima Taro. Apparently the mermaid is Urashima's illegitimate daughter from a koi fish courtesan from the Dragon Palace's red light district. :D
Japanese folklore is ancient and immense - it's truly its own branch of literature. IMHO it's far larger than Western mythology and folklore.

Hayao Miyazaki emerges from this tradition - enough said.

OK now I'm imagining a Miyazaki take on this whole story 😂
Fun! What would the male hosts be? Shrimp?...
It's sorta dizzying, half of my brain firing in Japanese, just opening the door to Watatsumi / 大綿津見神 lets out a hundred myths right there.

Dragons - of a sort. Something out of Kojiki for sure.

Now there is something that is DEFINITELY a thing in modern pop culture... :D
Cue "Ryugu Host Club" series
Maybe also come lick my wife and loose a few days would also be profitable.
