So #ThePitt did a shout out and led me to this book. Definitely reading, it looks awesome. Sharing in case anyone else needs recommendations for the #PolymathReadingChallenge ;)

Book bk Kevin Hazzard titled "American sirens: The incredible story of the Black men who became America's first paramedics". Cover features a black and white photo of a Black man sitting in an ambulance
I read it; great book!
oh I remember reading about this! Many of the men were considered unemployable, too, because of racism & educational discrimination. Also this may be the first time I've seen men referred to as "sirens" and I love it xD
Seconding this recommendation! Amazing book.
@DecaturNature There was an episode of the It’s Criminal podcast based on this book! https://thisiscriminal.com/episode-222-the-paramedics-6-8-2023/
I loved hearing about this on the show. I was also dismayed this is not something that is highlighted or talked about more. In this current climate, this is critical information. Of course I was dismayed to hear we did it first. Then of course once they worked it out they were fired and it was only for white people. Yet, the aggrieved are the ones that always benefit. Usually off the backs of others who do not look like them. Black excellence will never be taken from us!
yeah. I was stunned but not surprised. Goes on my list of "why is THIS not a full TV show?" Of course I know the answer. :/
