"I don't care what other people say about me" is a very nice philosophy to have. And it's often quoted as the number one way to self-care.

Sadly, a lot of people simply HAVE to care. Because their job depends on reputation. Or personal connections. And one malicious rumor mill can cost them. Cost actual livelihood.

Think about that before you say "well, just don't listen to them!"

Totally, telling people not to care about how others see them is one of the worst 'pieces of advice' people can give.

I think the broader point here is, telling someone an obvious solution to their problem is never helpful.
Even if they are an idiot, they probably are aware of it.
They then considered ramifications of that simple solution and decided against it for a myriad of reasons.
So, you just sound like an asshole for telling them something stupid obvious.
