You might have noticed that some accounts on here have posts much longer than 500 characters. If you're wondering how this is possible, find out in this guide:

TL;DR - You need to be on a server that allows larger post sizes, either running a modified version of Mastodon or a totally different kind of Fediverse server.

You can browse some well-run servers with larger post sizes in the "larger post size" section of fedi.garden:

#FediTips
We're allowed 11,000 characters because apparently @jerry got into a character limit war with another instance 🤣

I won't prove that in this post though!
Why are all #FediTips so mastodon centred?

Where are the references to the services that can draw more like #Akkoma#Pleroma#WriteFreely#Hubzilla#Streams#Friendica#Sharkey#IceShrimp#Misskey etc.

In the list are only mastodon instances, not one with another software, why?

#FediTipps#FediTp#NeuHier#Introduction
I'm trying to help new people, and most new people are entering the Fediverse via Mastodon (and a lot on Pixelfed right now too).

But I do post about other platforms too, I have an account dedicated to PeerTube & OwnCast at @FediVideo and a website at https://fedi.video

I have an account dedicated to Pixelfed at @PixelfedHelp

The list is of instances that commit to rules at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site

If you know other instance that follow these rules, let me know.
Your tips have a bias. They leave out all other text services. This can also be called a dark pattern.
So why do all the others always have to point out that the functions they want are available in the other services? This doesn't appear in the tips, but there are long instructions on how to get what you want with the help of third-party services.

Mastodon is just one software of many in the Fediverse. And if the tips only ever offer Mastodon as a solution, that's a dark pattern.
It's the same as always offering solutions to internet problems that only work with Chrome or Edge.

You call the whole thing FediTipp and only do MastodonTips.
How do you know that the others wouldn't rather use Sharkey than three crutches to get it to work with Mastodon?

For the sake of completeness, there would also be Friendica, Misskey, IceShrimp, Sharkey, Foundkey, Hubzilla, etc. instances should have been in the list. All these services already offer more characters than text services in the Fediverse.

Your list is all well and good and probably applies to more than 50% of all instances in the Fediverse. Rather, you need to find the ones that don't handle it that way.

And even in the text to list is written with a mastodon bias.
It wouldn't have to, if you only took the points in your criterion as a basis.
That's just not true, I've frequently posted about GoToSocial for example and it is featured on the website:

https://fedi.tips/gotosocial-safe-and-lightweight

...but at the moment GTS is mainly aimed at self-hosting people. It isn't easy to sign up on for others.

I tried posting about Calckey/Firefish but the developer suddenly abandoned it without warning. Since then I've been waiting for stability in *key.

I love Friendica:

...but it still lacks a moderation system.

but at the moment GTS is mainly aimed at self-hosting people. It isn't easy to sign up on for others.
It's aimed at smaller instances for you and a few friends, sure. Maybe 50 users or less, though I'm sure it would scale to a bit more than that without issue.

But there's a regular signup page for it, which forces manual review, and no more than 20 unapproved signups can be in the queue at once.... so in the case of a Mastodon where thousands of people can just flood onto your server overnight, that's not really possible with GTS....by design.

Perhaps what you mean is that with the requirement for installing another client and not providing a front-end by default, that makes it harder to use?
"Perhaps what you mean is that with the requirement for installing another client"

I don't mean that, it's fine if an instance works through apps as that's what most people use anyway.

I just mean there's no equivalent of JoinMastodon.org or JoinBookWyrm.com etc where ordinary people can go and find a GTS server. There isn't any obvious onboarding?

I would absolutely *LOVE* to list GTS on https://fedi.garden but cannot find public instances to feature?
p.s. This is not a criticism of GTS, I love the way they are doing things. It's incredibly mature that they are taking their time to get things right before recommending people use it.

They deliberately stayed in alpha for a long time to make sure they had certain features in place, and specifically told people not to use it until they were ready for beta.

If they have a long term plan for onboarding then that's great, and it's totally fine if it takes a while.
Ahhhhh, I get it now.

Ahhh yeah, I see. GTS is sort of.... anti-that, and the idea of having a flagship instance, for that matter.
I am deliberately not promoting flagship instances on fedi.garden (there's a maximum size limit after which instances are delisted).

But it seems like GTS currently doesn't have any public instances at all? GTS instances are all ones where you have to already know the person who runs it? If someone doesn't know anyone who self-hosts, they're sort of shut out of using GTS?

(Again, not a criticism, but this is why GTS is difficult to promote to new non-tech people.)

So technically I have 3 public "island network" GTS instances that anyone can sign up for, to join the Island One network.

https://codeberg.org/oliphant/islands/src/branch/main/ion#users-signing-up

Only Canary Island has broad federation with the wider fedi.
Interesting! This seems like a very different approach to federation thanks to the allowlist system?

I will keep an eye on this 😃
Yes!

Have you not read my posts on island networks?

Not yet, but just bookmarked it!

Have long been wondering if more could be done with allowlists for people who want to build safety-first social networks, fantastic to see it happening! 🤩

Brilliant 👍
So everyone has their favourite service in the Fediverse.

And even if there are no official join pages, the services are all alive.
Perhaps this is also one of the possible tasks for FediTips - to make the access to the services better known. And we can help.

You wrote above that you were waiting for Calckey/FireFish. But it wasn't abandoned so suddenly. In September last year, it was publicly announced that work on the project would be discontinued on New Year's Eve 2024-25.
The successor project is #IceShrimp and they have also been working on it for over a year. All public information, but apparently it didn't reach you?
Yes, IceShrimp doesn't have such a nice join page, but the project is still alive. Everything takes place in the repository - https://iceshrimp.dev/iceshrimp/iceshrimp.netNot nice but effective if you don't have the manpower to maintain an extra website. And that's how it is for many projects.

And in addition to the Misskey family with very active Sharkey development, there are also Catodon and Foundkey, which are also alive and well and have their fans.
Maybe you know the video about Sharkey: https://youtu.be/fQ4Xm92vcq8
Then what about Akkoma and Pleroma. All services that are older than Mastodon and are not reported on.

At least in German we also write about the other services and try to keep them visible, but this is difficult if only Mastodon is reported on.

In the internal link to:
What other kinds of servers are on the Fediverse?
even the better-known text services are unfortunately not even mentioned. Not even Misskey, which is also older than Mastodon.

Many of these services make life easier in the Fediverse - they just have one problem - they don't have a voice.

And that's what I would expect from a FediTip service.

And, I have no problem helping with articles and contributing my perspective.
Because as I said, the Misskey family already comes with 3000 characters, to stay with the initial post. 😉
And you can find open instances of every software via https://firefish.fediverse.observer/list👍
