After a hard-fought, record-breaking battle, the winner of Mineral Cup 2024 is Rhodochrosite! The light-hearted campaign brought home the bacon, and it couldn’t have been more tasty. Kudos to #TeamKyanite; well done!

Rhodochrosite, a flamboyant carbonate and possibly a key to the Mn cycle up agians Kyanite, a bladed aluminosilicate. While we still want revenge for Calcite, it's Go #TeamCarboante!

Rhodochrosite, also known as Rosa del Inca and Raspberry Spar is a distinctive pink-to-red carbonate that is a mix of utility and charm. Kyanite, while famous for being blue, can be a wide variety of colours, often zoned and sometimes pleochroic.

Congratulations, #Rhodochrosite. Your blush won us over. Farewell #Perovskite. Next year may find less resistance.
Dioptase, the desert emerald, forms in alteration zones of deserts. It is so sparkly that its name alludes to the visibility of internal cleavage planes. Blue blades of Kyanite are a classic mineral found in rock shops, introductory geology classrooms, eroded mountains, and geological research laboratories.

Perovskite has a flair for high-profile environments, found in the rain in brown dwarf stars, in volcanic fumaroles, and in kimberlite pipes rocketing from mantle to crust. Rhodochrosite’s crystals can be the palest blush to the darkest blood red, and can form rhombohedral and scalenohedral crystals, rosettes, blades, and massive and botryoidal crystals

But hey, my lovely Rhodochrosite is still in the game!
Don't forget to vote in #MinCup24 !
Wavellite is the kiwi of the mineral world, a rare phosphate mineral with a charming appearance.
Dioptase’s exotic desert beauty and rich emerald green are always ready for their close-up.
Which green will you choose?

This matchup is all about timing.
Titanite's main claim to fame is as an indicator mineral for everything from formation temperature, pressure and chronology. Calcite’s U-Pb dating can help constrain the timing of fault slip, and the minimum age of ancient ocean crusts and volcanic rocks
Time to choose a mineral!

Congratulations #rhodochrosite! Your meat-rock cry has rallied your fans to victory. Farewell #quartz. Your myriad of varieties, colours, and forms will return in Mineral Cup 25.
Omphacite tells the tale of high-pressure subduction and the tectonic forces that brought it back. Kyanite whispers of the great mountain ranges under which it formed, and are now eroded away. Which mineral’s story moves you?

Dioptase is rare and has glorious emerald to teal-green vitreous and translucent crystals. Vivianite can grow on decaying wood, bones and other organic material, much to gothic delight.
If this match feels familiar, we saw this same battle in Round 2 Match 3 of Mineral Cup 2023. But every year are new voters with new motivations! Which will you choose this year?

Howlite is an opaque bone-white mineral marbled with black veins and a massive habit that earns it the nickname “white tourquise.” Soft, dark stibnite has a flare for the dramatic as kohl, an eyeliner used starting in 3000 BCE.

Every mineral has now won a match to make it this far, but there’s no time to rest and no second chances in this knockout competition!
Round 2 starts with intrigue as Abelsonite defies definitions with its origins and Perovskite tantalizes possible applications with its structure.

In a battle of the biggest stones, these minerals are ready to rumble.
Topaz forms some of the largest gemstone crystals in the world, famous specimens weighing more than a teenager. The largest crystal of Spodumene ever found is the size of a Right Whale.
Which one will you choose?

#MinCup24 R1 M15: #Calcite versus #Celestine
A component of limestone and seashells, calcite shows off its rhombohedral shape as stunning Iceland spar. Celestine is often sky-blue although it can also be reminiscent of sunsets, overcast skies, and even smoggy days.

"Bad guest" Cacoxenite returns as a fragile fluffball of translucent orange.
Newbie Charoite is such a striking purple, people once thought it was dyed.
They're both beautiful with unusual shapes, but only one moves on to Round 2!

It’s a clash of titans as two iconic minerals face off this round. Which will you choose?
Quartz is the most prevalent mineral on the surface of the Earth. Today it faces off against mercury, the only naturally-occurring metal to be liquid at room temperature!

However, my vote goes to Rhodochrosite because it reminds me of the German legend of King Laurin's Rose Garden. Laurin was a Dwarf king of the mountains called the Rose Garden, and all of their mineral treasures. That always reminded me of Rhodochrosite (lit. a rose-colored mineral).

I really like Howlite, but at the last mineral show someone tried to sell me dyed howlite as chrysocolla and I was miffed.
It’s time to get spooky with #Howlite’s bone-like appearance and #Whewellite’s hidden origins! It's a pair of newcomers to the cup with lots for you to uncover.

It features into some of my favorite folktales and legends:
- The City of Brass (1001 Nights), where djinn are captured in copper vessels and adventurers explore a magical city
- The Copper Forest, a Hungarian folktale where one of the stereotypical three princesses is actually in love with the enemy king, and finds a way to marry him in the end

Also, #kaolinite may be classic and will probably win (and will probably be what spouse votes for), but I went for #abelsonite.
Listen I may only be a lay person who doesn't understand all the science, but it's an organonickel. Science thinks the organic part is *chlorophyll* even tho it forms at depth, according to mindat. How fucking cool is that?!

Incidentally, it's also the weeked of the Budapest Mineral Show. Where people can vote for Mineral of the Year 2025 and Fossil of the Year 2025 😊 3 candidates each. The geologists at the booth are lobbying hard for their favorites. I was won over by the opal lobby. And got a button!
