The first of the Reconstruction Amendments, it outlawed people from being enslaved in the entire United States, with exceptions listed for those convicted of crimes. The Thirteenth Amendment had wide-reaching ramifications in the United States, some of which continue today.”

On this day in 1955, the civil rights activist Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver's order to vacate a seat for a white female passenger after the "white" section of the bus was filled.

Parks wasn't the first person who resisted bus segregation, but she helped inspire the black community to boycott the city buses for over a year.

His passionate words made world headlines, alienated many white fans, and divided Black America.
