"Vancouver school staff and anyone else with links to the files could read everything. Firewalls or passwords didn’t protect the documents, and student names were not redacted, which cybersecurity experts warned was a massive security risk.

The monitoring tools often helped counselors reach out to students who might have otherwise struggled in silence. But the Vancouver case is a stark reminder of surveillance technology’s unintended consequences in American schools.

In some cases, the technology has outed LGBTQ+ children and eroded trust between students and school staff, while failing to keep schools completely safe.

Gaggle Safety Management, the company that developed the software that tracks Vancouver schools students’ online activity, believes not monitoring children is like letting them loose on “a digital playground without fences or recess monitors,” CEO and founder Jeff Patterson said.

Roughly 1,500 school districts nationwide use Gaggle’s software to track the online activity of approximately 6 million students. It’s one of many companies, like GoGuardian and Securly, that promise to keep kids safe through AI-assisted web surveillance."

"Our 10-year-old ... couldn't survive in the state system"

Alexander Henry Fenwick Armstrong is literally descended from landed gentry.

Torygraph: "Alexander Armstrong: ‘I’m really angry about Starmer’s private school tax – and extremely poor’"

GET IN THE FUCKING SEA 🤬

Extract from Torygraph article in main post:

All four of Armstrong's boys are at private school; the only time his bonhomie cracks is when Keir Starmer's VAT policy comes up. "I'm feeling really, really angry about that, and extremely poor," he says. "In our case, private school is the only place available for our children to learn music. Our 10-year-old has special educational needs, he couldn't survive in the state system. We have chosen that not because we're evil, and not be cause want to buy a head-start for our children, but we want them to have as good an education as we can get."

#TrumpLies are too many for me to live #FactCheck. I’ll try to deal w/that shitshow later, tho I’ll highlight a few.

E.G.
Trump just claimed he’s stopped “government censorship” & “brought back free speech in America.” In reality, Trump has signed #ExecutiveOrders that’s required the govt to scrub certain words & phrases from the public domain, dictating “patriotic education,” & just today announced that #schools would lose federal funding if they allowed students to engage in certain protests.

Dek: When a gunman killed two of her students, Ivy Schamis was the only adult in the room. Her journey through guilt and healing sheds light on the impossible role of American teachers.

Children return to school in Gaza

Students have begun returning to schools across the Gaza Strip after Israel’s war on the enclave saw school suspended for more than 16 months.

Many school buildings were damaged by Israeli bombardment while others were used as shelters during the war.

The 2024-2025 academic year in Gaza has begun amid severe challenges, with the majority of schools in the besieged enclave destroyed by Israeli air raids since October 2023.

Many young students have also lost their homes, families, and even parents during the ongoing conflict.

Despite this, more than 300 children were in attendance at one school in Gaza City – repeatedly targeted by Israeli forces over the past 15 months – as it reopened amid the ceasefire.

"Parents, students, teachers, and administrators throughout North America are smarting from what could be the biggest data breach of 2025: an intrusion into the network of a cloud-based service storing detailed data of millions of pupils and school personnel.

The hack, which came to light earlier this month, hit PowerSchool, a Folsom, California, firm that provides cloud-based software to some 16,000 K–12 schools worldwide. The schools serve 60 million students and employ an unknown number of teachers. Besides providing software for administration, grades, and other functions, PowerSchool stores personal data for students and teachers, with much of that data including Social Security numbers, medical information, and home addresses."

About 15,000 school-aged children and 800 people who worked in the education sector were killed in the war.

Relentless Israeli bombardment also damaged 95 percent of educational institutions in Gaza and put 85 percent of them out of commission.

As Labour plans to reduce/narrow the advantages enjoyed by Academy schools, Stephen Gorard (DurhamU) argues that this fair enough as they've failed to raise the attainment of pupils; rather the policy that has demonstrated a range of benefits is the payment of the Pupil Premium.

That 'policy is linked to a decline in clustering of pupils by poverty & to an uneven decline in the poverty attainment gap, in a way that academisation is not'!

by James Wright in The Canary @thecanaryuk @UKLabour

“This [IFS] report reveals the reality that is facing many schools and colleges – yet another round of cutbacks. It will inevitably mean further reductions to pastoral support, curriculum options and classroom resources. It is also likely that in many cases class sizes will increase.”

I love applied linguistics : how to identify messages and attitude embedded by stealth via language semiotics - word connotation, grammar, usage.
This should be taught in all schools at all levels.
It’s how we are manipulated.
#linguistics #language #education #schools
From a friend:
👇
George Lakoff in the ‘90s alerted me to Atlas (the Atlas Network) in his book ‘Don’t think of an elephant’. He is a linguist and focuses on the use of language to frame an issue. The wealthy right organise to influence language, coming up with phrases that have embedded themselves into our media, eg ‘tax burden’ (= ‘tax’) and ‘tax relief’ (= ‘tax cut’). The newest phrase I have detected is ‘household recession’ ie a per capita recession. The Oz today led with a claim we are having ‘the longest household recession in history’ under Labor, which is a lie as we had a per capita recession through most of the LNP’s incumbency - that’s why interest rates were near zero for so long. Angus ‘Great job’ Taylor has adopted the new phrase. We need to fight this language creep at every opportunity, everywhere.

There is an 'absence epidemic' in schools with large numbers of those from disadvantaged backgrounds persistently absent from school.... Bridget Phillipson has suggested schools need to be more engaging for this group as well as offering more support... Ken O'Toole thinks expand work placements to younger students would give them a flavour of why school might help them get where they want.

Has anyone asked the children why their absent, I wonder?

Q. are private schools gaming the special needs provisions of exam boards to get their A-level students longer time to complete their exams?

Given the gap between the provision of extra time in the state sector & private sector, either students from wealthier families are more likely to have special education needs, or there is something fishy going on... I'm sure some students in private schools do need the extra time but not nearly half!!!

Something fishy, methinks!

#schools #education
Chart: More than 40% of private school pupils receive extra time in exams. Share of students with 25% extra time.
2018-19: non-selective secondary state school - 16%/provate schools - 26%

2022-23: 24.5%/29%
