Today, vaccine refusal might seem like a brave stand against white-jacketed overlords—until your children are stricken with measles or whooping cough.

Modern societies, as Americans are soon to learn, cannot function without experts in every field, especially the many thousands who work in public service. The first step in containing the damage is to see Trump’s and Musk’s goals for DOGE clearly: It is a project rooted in resentful arrogance, and its true objective is not better government, but destruction."

Well, what hasn’t gone wrong? As University of Michigan political scientist Don Moynihan writes, “Musk and DOGE are providing a real-time management case study. Unfortunately, all of the lessons are about what not to do.” After all, last week DOGE fired—with no real review, no notice, and no transition period—one in five of the federal employees who manage our nuclear stockpile. Maybe we don’t need all those employees currently working at the National Nuclear Security Administration? Maybe we need more? Maybe their duties should be reorganized in some way or another? I don’t know. Neither does DOGE. So, when experts and the public and Congress reacted negatively to the firings, DOGE scrambled to reinstate the employees. Text from article: I want to add a few additional points that provide context. First of all, there’s DOGE proper. The White House took the U.S. Digital Service, an organization which grew out of the botched launch of the Obamacare exchange system in 2014, and rebranded it as the U.S. DOGE Service. Get it? They keep the same initials, USDS. That gave DOGE a ready-made administrative shell, based out of the White House, to operate from. As 404 Media reported, they’ve also rerouted their place in the executive branch org chart to go through the White House Chief of Staff rather than OMB, where it was heretofore, so it won’t be subject to FOIA disclosure. So there’s people who are formally part of what’s now called the U.S. DOGE Service. But a number of people who are part of the same operation have gotten appointments at various agencies around the executive branch. They’re not formally part of the rebranded USDS. But they’re part of the same operation, the same group of Musk operatives carrying out Musk’s plans across the federal government.

"A document authored by an anonymous group of whistleblowers accuses Elon Musk of attempting to spearhead a private hostile takeover of the US Government on behalf of an extremist anti-democracy philosophy known as the ‘neo-reactionary’ movement, by effectively hijacking the Republican Party.

The group, who are withholding their identity for fears of being targeted, includes former Silicon Valley and US technology leaders. They describe themselves as former followers of the neo-reactionary movement, also known as the ‘Dark Enlightenment’ – a burgeoning Internet philosophy which seeks to abolish the drive for greater equality and the very existence of democracy itself.

The extraordinary whistleblower memorandum was published on Friday 7 February through Dave Troy, an American technologist and investigative journalist.

The memo describes Elon Musk, the eponymous billionaire CEO of Tesla – now a US Government official in charge of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – as attempting to exploit his position in the Trump administration to exert unilateral control of the entire US federal Government. It says that this is happening at the expense of both Donald Trump and the Republican Party. "

"Over the last few weeks, as Elon Musk and DOGE have infiltrated government agency after government agency, proclaiming their intent to slash budgets, cut jobs, and embrace AI, we’ve watched a brazen, extralegal effort to hollow out the state unfold in real time. Now up to 200,000 workers are being targeted in mass layoffs. Much of the collective horror has stemmed from the broader implications this campaign—orchestrated by an unelected tech billionaire who has enriched himself with government contracts—has for our democracy. It has after all been carried out with no congressional oversight and often in stark defiance of judicial orders. It’s been called a coup, or an autogolpe, a coup from inside, or American authoritarianism.

But it’s also happening to real people, who are experiencing it all in excruciating, real-time dread. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been talking with federal tech workers about what’s happening, how they’re processing it, and how they’re pushing back. I’ve spoken to workers representing the full spectrum: From 10-year veterans to first-year tech workers in their probationary periods—and thus more vulnerable to termination—and from different departments across the government.

I wanted to share some of their stories, with their permission, because they help illuminate what’s going on at the personal level—even while we’re justifiably preoccupied with the ramifications for democracy writ large and the assault on our institutions.
