With #Gaza being under fire by #Israel again, #hospitals are experiencing horrors.

CW: the linked article contains details about wounded children, and about insufficient means to treat them.

»“They had been sleeping so were coming in wearing pyjamas, wrapped in blankets. Often it was neighbours bringing them because the #parents had been killed. It was horrific. We had to stop resuscitating several #kids simply to focus on one who had a chance,” said Haj-Hassan.

Feroze Sidhwa , a 43-year-old trauma surgeon from California, in Khan Younis as a volunteer with the medical charity #MedGlobal, described telling the father of one four-year-old #girl that his daughter was not going to live more than a few more minutes. “I had a look … She had very serious head injuries … I told her dad to take her outside and be with her and pray with her and he did,” Sidhwa told the Guardian.«

“The first Geneva Convention was signed in 1864, and that was the first creation of international law, at least in the West, and it’s specifically about not obstructing the work of physicians and nurses.”

“This is barbarity. This isn’t how reasonable civilised people behave. It doesn’t matter what they were trying to do. You don’t bomb a hospital no matter what, that’s not how it works.”

Sidhwa, a volunteer surgeon at Nasser Hospital

Key Gaza cancer hospital demolished

The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital and medical school was built and equipped by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), a government agency similar to USAID.

Construction on the hospital began in 2011 and was completed in 2017, at a cost of $70m.

The hospital was considered the largest medical facility in Gaza, with total interior space of 33,400 square metres (359,514 square feet ).

Israel blew-up Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, which was built by Turkiye and operated by local authorities as a cancer treatment facility.

The hospital, located in the Netzarim Corridor close to Salah al-Din Street, was being used as a command centre by Israeli forces during their previous military assault in central and northern Gaza.

Earlier today it was blown up completely after having been rebuilt with a Turkish donation of $34m in 2017.

Israeli forces’ actions while occupying Palestinian hospitals in Gaza amount to war crimes, Human Rights Watch has found.

In a new report published today, HRW concluded that the Israeli military caused deaths and unnecessary suffering among Palestinian patients, including by denying electricity, water, food, and medicines to patients, shooting civilians, mistreating health workers and deliberately destroying medical facilities and equipment.

Australian doctor recounts harrowing experience treating victims of Gaza bombing

Australian doctor Mohammed Mustafa, who is volunteering at a Gaza hospital, has recounted the distressing experience of treating the latest victims of Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

“We’ve run out of all painkillers. We can’t sedate anyone. We can’t give them any analgesia,”

Urgent spokesman for the #Palestinian Ministry of Health, Khalil Al -Dakran:

The Ministry of #Health has no medical supplies in stock in the #Gaza Strip and most #hospitals are only partially operating.

Most of the residents of the #Gaza Strip sleep in worn tents, due to the failure of the occupation to fulfill its obligations as part of the ceasefire agreement.

A large number of patients died, due to the failure to go out for treatment outside #Gaza.

We demand pressure on the occupation to implement the humanitarian part of the ceasefire agreement, stressing that those who went out for treatment outside #Gaza did not exceed 25% of the percentage to be released.

The #occupation lags in the implementation of the human protocol contained in the #ceasefire agreement.

_The Evening Post_, 27 February 1925:
LOCAL AND GENERAL…
A #Wellington periodical recently published #photographs showing a number of infantile paralysis #patients who are under treatment at the Wellington Hospital. At yesterday’s meeting of the Hospital Board, exception to the photographs being published was taken by Mr. C. H. Chapman, who wanted to know who gave permission for the photographs to be taken. He voiced his strong disapproval of such photographs being permitted to be taken, and said he hoped that whoever had taken them would never be permitted to do so again. The chairman (Mr. F. Castle) said as far as he knew no member of the board gave authority. Mr. C. M. Luke stated that his committee intended to bring up the matter at its next meeting.

“Whoever stays until the end will tell the story. We did what we could – remember us.”

These were the words Dr Mahmoud Abu Nujaila wrote on October 20, 2023, at al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia refugee camp. He scribbled them in blue ink on a whiteboard used for surgery schedules. They were a testament to resilience, a final message of defiance.

This is how you do it: "#NewYork Attorney General Letitia James on Monday told #hospitals that they would be violating state law if they stop offering gender-affirming care for people under age 19 in response to an executive order from President #DonaldTrump aimed at curtailing federal funding for such treatments."

For no good reason I was thinking about our daughter's long stay in the psychiatric hospital.

There were a lot of patients on the ward (possibly about 2/3) who never got any visitors.
Where were their families, spouses, parents, children? Not to mention freinds?

The ward staff were delighted that our daughter had visits and support from her parents, brother, neices and work-collegues - she was certainly the exception among the patients.
I like to think that our support helped in her recovery, I definitely think it made her stay there more bearable.

If you know of someone receiving long term hospital care - psychiatric or otherwise - please don't abandon them. Make an effort. It won't always be easy, but doing good isn't always the easy road.

Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, stated that the destruction inflicted upon Al-Shifa Complex, the largest medical institution in Gaza, exceeded 95% due to the recent Israeli devastating genocidal war on the strip which lasted for 15 months.

Note how the US #medicalcare shitstem falls apart in crises and #disasters. Four hour wait just to unload the ambulance. 😗

Latest ER "wall time" update as of 1/25/24. 4 hour wait time at the ER last night for the medic in the family to unload patients. (not enough beds at the ER/hospital). They were running out of ambulances, so in many cases fire crews (in our county, Medic Engines) will sit with a patient at their home until an ambulance can be freed up for transport. Advice from the medic: "NOW IS NOT THE WEEK TO GET SICK OR GET HURT". (in case you're thinking about doing the Milk Crate Challenge this week).

In response to ill-conceived claims that #Hamas is using hospitals: The first claim was not about the #AlShifaHospital but #Qatar's hospital in #KhanYounis where a water well was painted as a "Hamas tunnel". The #Israelis are to be accused of conflated war politics.

Who is Dr Hussam Abu Safia?

The director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital has not been heard from since Israeli forces arrested him in a raid on his medical facility last month.

Here’s what we know about him:

Dr Hussam Abu Safia, 51, a paediatrician by training, holds a master’s degree and a Palestinian board certification in paediatrics and neonatology.

Delegations from the 15-member states of the UN Security Council are set to meet later today for an emergency meeting to discuss Israeli attacks on hospitals in Gaza, especially the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north.

The session was requested by Algeria, the Arab representative in the council that also chairs it for January.
