We have good pies...
But don't yours have, like, sheep and mittens in them?
🤣
Maybe, but our sheep aren't full of antibiotics.
yes. And if you HAVE to because of work or something, take a burner instead and communicate only by text or voice. No internet at all.
I'd say there's an excellent case for flat out refusing, even for work purposes.
yes. I'd agree. Personally there's no way I'd go but other's careers might depend on it. Consular staff for example. They have an important role to play. I'd get the hell outta dodge myself, even if I'd migrated there. And I'd seriously reconsider returning after the orange monster and his minions were ended. Too unstable.
Also use a burner phone if you're going to a demonstration in the UK as we're not far behind the US in becoming a police state.
100% - I've been doing that for a few years now.
as a young researcher I struggle to imagine my reaction if I was put in the same position. On the one side, letting immigration officers search my devices goes against everything I belive in. Yet, is sticking to my principles worth missing out on a career-making opportunity like a conference in the US?
Last time ( 4 years ago I think ) we passed by USA ( connecting flight ) there were already questions like "What social media are you in ?" with tick boxes like "Facebook" "Discord" "Instagram" "TikTok", "Twitter", I think even "Telegram". They were checking already something at that time. Luckily I was in none of them and "Mastodon" was not contemplated. I think "if they have wind you may have said something" they may intensify the search.
Sheesh, really? I stopped going to the US once they passed the first Patriot Act after 9/11, but the more widespread civil unrest gets, the more stringent these crackdowns are going to become.
