Jesus. Update on the guy who was taken from Columbia University. Sounds like he's effectively been disappeared.
How long before 47 starts suspending habeas corpus across the board?

Last night ICE agents wrongfully arrested Mahmoud Khalil, claiming his student visa was revoked - even though Mahmoud is legal permanent resident (green card) and not in the US on a student visa. Confronted with that fact, the ICE agents detained him anyway. Overnight we filed a habeas corpus petition on Mahmoud's behalf challenging the validity of his arrest and detention. Currently we do not know Mahmoud's precise whereabouts. Initially we were informed this morning that he had been transferred to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. However, when his wife - A US citizen who is 8mths pregnant and was threatened with arrest as well - tried to visit him there today, she was told he is not detained there. We have subsequently received reports that Mahmoud may be transferred as far away as Louisiana. We will vigorously be pursuing Mahmoud's rights in court, and will continue our efforts to right this terrible and inexcusable - and calculated - wrong committed against him.
ICEs arrest and detention of Mahmoud follows the US gvt's open repression of student activism and political speech, specifically targeting students at Columbia for criticism of Israel's assault on Gaza. The US gvt has made clear that they will use immigration enforcement as a tool to suppress that speech. Many individuals and organisations have expressed support for Mahmoud and outrage at the gvt's conduct and have offered their assistance in the legal proceedings, which is appreciated by Mahmoud and us.

Not long. This administration is ignoring court rulings already. When the three legs of what constitutes democracy are gone - congress, senate, courts, - there is trouble ahead. Whether it will lead to a civil war, or a brutal state forces repression of protests and objectors, remains to be seen. But this administration rejecting all the normal rules means it will suffer the consequences itself, even if it’s too arrogant to realise that yet.
I think it'll try it first with cases relating to protesters - whether they be Palestine, or other rights like abortion - where there's unlikely to be much pushback from their hardline voters, because they think it won't happen to them.
Did you see another plane's fallen out of the sky in Pennsylvania?
I did. Loads of flames, so tragically I suspect the passengers did not survive. That’s a lot of plane accidents in a very short period of time - since #DOGE cut back the #FAA
#faa #doge
Amazingly, the last I saw (admittedly before I went to bed, so it could easily have changed) was that there were several injured but no dead.
I think that might be six crashes now? Perhaps more, I haven't kept up. You might be interested in this:

Musk wants control of the air, with his untested and unapproved system which works off Starlink. Then he can just switch it off when he thinks he’s not paid enough, or not given the control of something else he demands. He’s switched off Starlink for Ukraine more than once already, so this is a known and documented risk.
There’s the complication of the contract with Verizon also.
And will other aircraft need different internal systems to be able to work with Musk’s version? Or could it be used to prevent a plan from landing on a whim? So many questions, so much room for bad management, malfeasance and malice.
Did you hear about the argument he's started with Poland re: switching off Starlink to Ukraine? Someone in the government - the Foreign Minister maybe, I'm not sure - mentioned that they have a $50mn contract with them that includes provision of service to Ukraine and threatened to cancel it. SK's reply was "be quiet little man".
How rude! I understand Poland is actively seeking another system to use instead of Starlink, and I hope many others are also. Those alternative systems must be designed so Starlink cannot interfere with their signals or block their signals.
There are active measures being considered with an EU alternative, the name of which eludes me atm, which would cover the whole of Europe as well as Ukraine. Whether the EU would have the balls to collectively give him the finger is another matter. They're too busy warmongering for now.
how can we talk with our kids about bullying at school when these stories are going on???
Lone Skum thinks there is no substitute for Starlink?

The 5G on my mobile phone is faster than that load of rubbish.
Judging how quickly their satellites seem to fall out of the sky, and how crap they are at getting rockets to take off without exploding, I really don't know how it got its reputation in the first place.
Mia are you still clandestine in Mordor?
Yup 🕵️ . I go there even more rarely than I used to but there's still a fair amount of protest information, and the on the ground reporters in Palestine seem still to be posting there rather than BS, which I'm not signing up for.
This is very bad.
It feels like the start of something really, really bad. Speculating pessimistically, I'd say they'll try suspension of habeas corpus when dealing with pro-Palestine student protesters first (primarily foreign, but then US nationals), then widen it to include all protesters, abortion rights cases, and I don't want to think any further than that. And the MAGAs will love it because they think it won't apply to them.
I’ve read about ice grabbing a few Europeans at the border entering legally with appropriate visas and holding them w/o contact in the last few weeks. Not looking at msm so not sure how much of a splash that’s making. This will though. Going bad fast. Too bad none of the houses here are old enough to have priests holes.
The German lady who's still in ICE detention somewhere got a lot of traction but I didn't see it in any of the major papers. That's the only one I heard about. I was talking to someone else about it earlier today who said bands are cancelling tours and the like. Doesn't help that planes keep falling out of the sky, like in Pennsylvania today.
I did hear about a second one but can’t recall where.
The plane thing is just reporting bias. We are actually having statistically fewer fatal plane crashes this year than normal, there just usually isn’t much reporting on them except locally since it’s almost always small planes and caused by operator error. The DC crash of AA 5342 was unusual, major plane crashes are rare here.
Oh yes, cuts to FAA and issues with air control staff are a real concern. It’s bonkers to fuck around with this.
Thanks for sharing. In this era of disinformation, though I haven't seen much of it here, link: https://zeteo.com/p/breaking-dhs-detains-palestinian
Just putting this here to recognize the lawyer, Amy Greer, who is on the front line of the resistance. Wishing her all the best.

Thanks mate, I'll add it to the main post if you don't mind?
Sure thing! 👍
I came across a book written by an Irish citizen detained by ICE. I was surprised by its content, especially the depiction of ICE's arbitrary nature and spite. Anyhow, it's 'ICE, Killing the American Dream' by Heike Phelan.

Blimey, and this was under Grandpa Joe?? Have you read it? Why were they detained?
AFAIK the German lady is still MIA.
Yes, the lady outstayed her visa as she had been injured in a car accident. She told them she WANTED to return home and would pay the fare but was detained anyway.
Very (VERY) slightly less egregious than the German lady then, but still massively excessive. The whole idea that Dems are somehow qualitatively different on immigration is for the birds.
Is there a way to donate to his legal fund?
I don't know I'm afraid and Xitter's down worldwide atm so I can't check. Maybe contact the legal firm direct by email?
I may do that, but I don't think a petition is going to make any difference to ICE or Trump. The courts are doing a good job so far of upholding the law. I'm looking for a way to help him with paying his lawyer.
I'm of your view when it comes to petitions these days. Ditto editorials in newspapers or "strongly worded letters", or anything else of that ilk. The parameters have fundamentally changed. X is back up now, so I'm going to look for some information on how to donate, as originally asked.
As an aside, with regard to your point about the courts, I think the operative words there are "so far".
Yup. I'm not against petition, letters, etc. Every little bit helps. But, anecdotally: I was an elected official once. I got shown a fair number of petitions. The ones with ink on paper made an impression on me. The ones on the web always had eight-billion "signatures" and, when I asked people about the statement, I found out most of them didn't actually read it first. Clicking is just too easy to mean much.

And, yeah, so far. But you fight with what you got.
Oh, I'm not against them per se either, but I don't put any faith in them either, particularly online ones. I've seen enough of them here with actual millions of signatures be "debated in Parliament" - half a dozen dusty old gits in Westminster Hall (not the Commons chamber), chuntering for an hour with zero results. It's called slacktivism for a reason after all.
You fight with what you've got until you get new things to fight with. We need to find them NOW.
Each person's got a different set of resources with which to fight (including time, money, and courage, among others). So, same as you, I'm okay with petitions, but I encourage people to donate, speak at public hearings, join activist groups, attend marches/rallies, volunteer on a campaign, run for office, write letters, write books even, host a meeting, go to law school, whatever fits for each person as an individual. There's lots to choose from.
For sure, I'm not going to denigrate anyone for doing or not doing one thing or another - we all have different abilities, time constraints etc. What I mean to say is that those who are willing to have to start thinking outside the box.
Well you've been proved right so far. Federal judge Jesse Furman has ordered that former Colombia student Mahmoud Khalil’s removal from the U.S. be halted pending a further hearing on a petition re. the Trump admin’s removal order.
You can read the order here:

Let's hope "so far" is far enough.
I guess we'll see what happens at the habeas hearing on Wednesday.
"So far" is all we've got for the moment.
Is the habeas petition online anywhere public? Those tend to be pretty pro forma, but they are sometimes detailed. Would like to see that.

One thing we had going for us in Trump 1.0 is that he insists on arguing all cases the same way: I'm the president so I have unlimited power. That always loses. Here, he is seeking to revoke legal resident status by inferring from Khalil's speech that he's giving aid to terrorists. That's a 1A violation. No president has that much power.
The only related docs I've seen are what I've posted I'm afraid.
I'm disinclined to rule out entirely an as yet unforeseen development, but I don't know enough about US law to even speculate about that.
Yeah, that was attached to my original reply about an hour ago 😁
Somewhat surprisingly, it leaves his attorney's email address visible. I've emailed her to ask about donations for legal costs. Will post any reply I can.
Cheers. I haven't managed to track anything down on that front.
I imagine she's in four-alarm mode right now. That order you found calls for some serious lawyering on a very short schedule. With any luck, though, I won't be the only one asking and a paralegal or other staffer can answer such emails.

God, I cannot believe the United States of America is arresting people without charges, detaining them in sequestration, because of things they say. Yet, I have to, because it's happening.
I've been searching the web for a donation portal. Amazing to me that I cannot find one. This needs a lot more press coverage than it's getting. Grabbing a guy and hiding him is utterly chilling. I'd give money to help that fight, for sure.
I've been having a look to see if any of those who were posting prolifically about it yesterday have supplied anything, but no luck so far.
It's actually worse than you think.
