I think you're mischaracterising both his personality and what he "believes" - if indeed he believes anything that can't be changed when circumstances require (as, I believe, he already has).
Bit rich from the country that sends tourists all over the world who lecture me in Berlin about their rights as an American citizen because service staff at the café refused to speak English to them....
Euch, American tourists. A certain kind of American tourist - we mustn't tar them all with the same brush. But *a lot* of American tourists. My friends and I used to deliberately send them miles out of their way when they asked us for directions in the centre of London 🤭
had one in my hometown asking where the border is in the rudest possible way. Called my town a shithole which...is fair. But only I get to call it that.
Funny thing was: dude stood directly AT the bridge that leads over the river into....well Poland.
Gave him very friendly detailed directions ....and itemized list of when to turn right and left and so on...
I never found out if he realized I sent him through the whole shithole again to the same spot.
But...it was CORRECT directions. I am very tourist friendly.
What a prick. Don't get me wrong - I am/was too! We were very selective of who we targeted. One couple we were stuck behind on a busy day in Covent Garden were absolutely *rancid* to shop staff, people who got in their way, and we heard them moaning about not being served within milliseconds of sitting down for their lunch, so when they asked us for directions to Soho later on by the DM shop, we gave them a "short cut" via the British Museum (about 2.5 miles out of their way).
I don't think it serves any purpose to lower ourselves to that level. It's certainly worth reminding a certain kind of American tourist that they're guests though - and I'm sure you know the kind I mean.
I know. Actually most visitors to Copenhagen really enjoy their stay and appreciate the Nordic way of living, including Americans. At least judging from the Facebook-group Copenhagen that I happened to come across when we spent some days in the city. Some of the questions asked are hilarious and show cultural differences.
The disingenuous part of this is the premise in the first line. I suspect very few people have ever regarded visiting America as an entitlement.
People don't think like that when they think, 'Oooh, I'd love to see the Grand Canyon', or 'I want to visit Disneyland and Epcot'.
When making holiday plans tourists simply assume they are visiting a sane country with reasonable and rational laws. Sadly, that is no longer the case.
Absolutely. Personally I've not been since they passed the Patriot Act, because NFW am I giving them my fingerprints and other biometrics, but there's no reason whatsoever to go there as a tourist or anything else now.
Thankfully I've no need to travel there for work anymore so until the USA retrieve their sanity I'm steering clear. And if I do ever visit again I'll be taking no digital equipment of any sort, just buy a phone on arrival.
‘Our’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence… all the Americans I know have values I respect. None of them respect Marco Rubio’s values. Nor does Rubio himself respect the laws of the US.
Hmm. Not the best advert for the national tourist industry: "Come to the USA, but if you break the rules, we'll f*ck you up! What are the rules? You find out when you break them!!"
Not even that though, is it. "What are the rules? Well, we might change our mind in the time between when you book your flight and when you arrive ... "
So he'll be fine with the rest of the world deciding that the US is not entitled to any of our money, is not entitled to preferential trading terms, and has no entitlement to lead the way on global issues?
The US will never re-earn the trust and influence lost in the past few months, or regain the privilege of global support for their country or their products.
Apart from switching planes in 2015, I haven't visited that shithole nation in 40 years, despite living only 100km away.
The laws of the USA, the values of the Ruling class of the USA and the executive orders of the current president of the USA are the reason civilised people do not want to visit the USA. @Sarahw
