So some of the details of Lego Thatcher's plans for the benefits system have dropped, and they make *actual* Thatcher look like Mary fucking Poppins.
ONLY benefits for sick and disabled people are being cut or frozen.

Short thread by Anushka Asthana on Rachel Reeves' budget plans for the welfare system:

Exclusive: we can reveal details of the Government's welfare shake-up. Over £6bn saved in total, 5 of which will come from making it hard to get Personal Independence Payments, PIP will also be frozen next year so no rise with inflation and overhaul of out of work benefits as well.
I've heard that the government is going to increae the basic rate of Universal Credit, but cut the rate for those judged as too unwell or disabled to work. Cost neutral according to sources, to incentivise work BUT
Will be hugely controversial as even those very clearly unable to work will be seeing cash cuts to their benifts it's a massive overhaul. Hearing that around £1bn of savings will be ploughed back in through employment support investment.
Only working people are people - that was obvious from the start.
And working people is a narrow slice of the population. Salaried, employed by big companies. Until old or ill, in which case it's into the void with the rest of us.
"£6bn saved" is only true in the numbers written. In reality abusing people financially like this is not isolated to those people bearing the brunt of the initial attack. The strain will be felt by their loved ones, and ripple out to all. Both financial and psychological strain.
That's the basic problem with "spreadsheet macro-economics". They never consider the knock-on effects, even on a basic economic level. Looked at in their own terms, if you give people unable to earn money less money, they'll have less money to put back into the economy, cost the NHS more, and the one thing they definitely won't do is go back to work. It's quite literally a death spiral, and there's 15 years of data that back it up.
Even with so much data to hand showing that 15 years of austerity has done absolutely nothing except make things worse for everyone - including the middle classes - you'd think even a bean-counter like Lego Thatcher would know better, but I guess that's what comes of lying on your cv and then selling yourself to the highest bidder.
Competence is the one thing they truly lack, throughout the cabinet, and in the four great offices of state, it's further blocked by hubris and arrogance, and their fucking ridiculous red lines.
