I have seen it before, but it doesn't cease to astonish me to see people complaining about the X-men "becoming woke."

Like.

Dude.

My dude.

My dear little angry strawberry muffin.

THE X-MEN?!

Have you, like... literally... read any of the basic premise?
Ever?...

#Xmen #Marvel #comics #popculture #representation #woke
: "I had no political culture when I started reading/watching those, so I assumed they were apolitical and was fine with it. Now that I have become aggressively conservative, however..."
Please... "Persons of X-ness."
lol. I mean you might not read comics, but movies kinda punched all this stuff in your face.
I do not think the X-Men mean what they think they mean. 😁
Reading for comprehension is not their strong suit.
Astronaut: X-MeN iS wOkE?!

Astronaut cocking gun: Always has been
I genuinely think there's an issue whereby these morons can't actually understand the kinds of metaphors sci-fi has deployed to depict social issues since the day dot, and its only when they see something they can recognise, like overt queer representation, that they think it has "gone woke".

Remembering that these fuckwits thought Starship Troopers was merely an action movie about alien insects, and believed Rage Against The Machine were speaking to their right-wing hearts

On youtube I watched them moaning that Dr Who villain Davros wasnt "in a wheelchair, FFS" because he was, and I shit you not, "part Dalek".

They are not clever people.
There is some complicated psychology behind it about how everyone likes to see themselves as the underdog. I once had a student who was very loud about how he was "persecuted" and "oppressed" in my class for being a Trumper. Since his course work was good he had all A's. Even got his time to "argue" in class. Still felt like the underdog.
"Persecuted" for RWNJ's means "forced to encounter people and ideas that don't agree with my ideology", not any, like, actual persecution.
There's a recurring bit from Brian Zahnd where he says Christians always see themselves as Israel under Rome's boot, and not the empire, despite their dominant cultural position.

@JuliusGoat 's recent piece on the mall shooting in Texas also talks about this: https://www.the-reframe.com/cruel-luxuries/

It's like only white dudes are permitted to be sympathetic. I think of news articles that frame white teenage criminals as "boys," but black teen suspects as "men."
That also kind of shows the limitations of metaphorical arguments. Like, powerful works of art can be read in whatever way people want. It's the same phenomenon that has people acting in wildly different ways, each claiming to have been inspired by the Bible.

This is why it's important to also have stuff that speaks in plain meaning.

I think they latch onto Wolverine. They see themselves as exiled because they're too tough and too resilient.
Also this is why I love Mastodon. 100+ reactions and no trolls yet.
Well, that is a situation that needs immediate rectification

Almost as infuriating as when someone claims Star Trek is “woke” now.

Is this a particular story line or creative team for the X-Men that the smooth-brains are calling “woke”?
Mutants who are also LGBT+? Imagine that.
I am stealing "strawberry muffin" for later reuse.
wait until they find out that Wolverine had a sexual relationship with Hercules.
woke means anti-racist, could be written, woke (ant-racist) to clarify it for news editors (reporters mostly already know).

So for example:

"I have seen it before, but it doesn't cease to astonish me to see people complaining about the X-men "becoming woke (anti-racist)."

Weren't Stan lee's 'superheroes' soemwhat woke from teh very begining? they all had the basic human frailties. that was the point, right? tho i'm still bothered that the woman in fantastic 4's superpower was INVISIBILITY! come on!
X-Men was an allegory for the Civil Rights movement from issue 1:1.

Spider-Man is weird; he was intended to develop into an Objectivist Great Man, but then Steve Ditko went to Charleton.

The Fantastic Four weren't woke, but they were flawed human beings. Invisibility is a pretty useful power, but even Lee and Kirby realised it was a bit lame for the F4 and gave Sue force fields within the first year.
@TarkabarkaHolgy
When Daredevil first appeared, his comic garnered praise from disability rights and awareness groups for being an incredibly positive portrayal of a disabled person.

Iron Man is not woke. Dude's a capitalist.

Thor... Lee and Kirby wanted to do a mythology-themed hero but figured that Greek mythology was played out. Unfortunately, Nazis are super into Norse stuff, but I don't think Marvel's Thor wants anything to do with them.
The Incredible Hulk isn't really woke, but She-Hulk kind of is. Whereas He-Hulk is a violent force of rage and destruction, Shulkie remains lucid and rational whether she's green or white, no matter how angry she gets.

So if you compare Shulkie to He-Hulk, the man is irrational and dangerous, and the woman isn't.
i dont' know many of these characters. i've watched some x-men movies.

now SQUIRREL girl... that comic i saw a few books. she rocks!
Ms. Marvel is also pretty great
Preach. I see the same thing all the time with Star Trek.
I never saw the politics of X men the first decade of me reading those comics. I think it took some article that pointed out the dynamics and how they relate to the politics of today to make me have that aha moment.
@CStamp The Venn diagram of these X-Men fans and similar critics of “woke” Star Trek is a perfect overlapping circle.
Totally reusing "my little dear angry strawberry muffin"
Don't tell them about Star Trek
I thought all these kind of stories were overexaggeration until I started working at a comic shop and heard people talking about Watchmen…
Even as a closeted teen in the eighties my brain somehow knew this was about me.

And gave me an image nothing else did: I could be a hero for being different.

(Also imprinted me on one specific body-type for men, 💪, which is a little problematic sometimes. 😁 )
hey, I ended up marrying a Cajun man who plays cards 🤷‍♀️ 😆
OMG. Now that's specific imprinting.
Now all I need is a very buff, very kind and polite Russian man with metallic skin to show up.
In very small shorts :D :D
