#FolktaleMoment of the day:

Reading a legend about how emperor Franz Joseph's wife was a witch who used to turn him into a horse and ride him every night.

As a reminder that traditional storytellers often used everyday spoken language, here is what the wise advisor says when the Emperor confides in him about the matter:

"F*** hell, Joe..."

:D

This is Elizabeth/Sissi? She was very eccentric and got unusual independence for a royal wife - I can see why she inspired witchcraft stories.
I don't think the storyteller knew exactly who either of them were - he insisted they lived before King Matthias, who ruled in the 15th century :D It was just a placeholder name for a king. The tale type itself is an international trope.
I got all excited about a 19th Century witch-Empress 😆
Source, or it didn't happen! . 😜
It's a Hungarian Roma folktale collection :D
Awww, too bad.

Well, I've largely focused on Tyrol when it comes to exploring Austrian folklore. But maybe I will find more juicy stuff when I get closer to the centers of power...
