The Five: The untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper - by Hallie Rubenhold

In this fascinating book the author researches the lives of Jack the Ripper's five victims. She does so to reframe the whole narrative: why are libraries written by the criminal, but nothing about the women who died? Why is there so much misinformation about who they were and how they lived?

Surprisingly detailed and touching book.

The cover of the book, featuring the figure of a 19th century woman with her back to us, walking down an empty, gloomy street.
I enjoyed this book.
Yes. Enjoyed both book and podcast.
The pushback from "Ripperologists" is fascinating: as if making the women into human beings with whole lives ruins their storytelling about the killer.
.... that's an actual thing??....
The pushback? Or Ripperologists?
This link predates Rubenhold's book.

I watched some of it on Twitter, as was.
At least 1 of the podcast episodes covers it.
I mean I can kinda see it. One thing I liked about the book was that it tore down the "mastermind criminal genius apex predator in the night" myth. Ripper was just a coward who liked to attack sleeping women.
