#art #history:
i like to think that tonight's aston villa win over PSG was for benjamin zephaniah on what would - & SHOULD - have been his 67th birthday.
he was practically perfect in every way - on palestine, non-human animals, the planet, equality & the monarchy - & i know this because he wouldn't have liked anyone holding him in such high esteem.
happy ben day, everyone.

digital pencil & ink illustration of magnificent & majorly missed human being, benjamin zephaniah.
he regards you directly, smiling, his hands raised to either side & the index finger on each hand pointing off to the side.
two lightning bolts (one green, the other red) balance above each finger.
ben's on a mustard yellow background.

how am i just finding out that ben zed's desert island discs fave is 'take five' by the dave brubeck quartet & - AND - that 'the poetical works of shelley' is his book choice? i didn't think i could love him more.
'i used to think of Shelley as just another one of those dead white poets who wrote difficult poetry for difficult people, but then I learnt how dedicated he was to justice & the liberation of the poor.'
this short piece that ben wrote for percy is just so fucking sweet.

Oooft. I don't think *anyone* should be bigging up Percy Shelley 😬
well, i know he was problematic...but i'm still happy to big him up for many of the same reasons as BZ's cited.

I'm just not altogether sure how dedicated he actually was to that particular cause, before you even start on the other stuff.
which particular cause?
Erm, the one you mention in your quote?
" ... but then I learnt how dedicated he was to justice & the liberation of the poor.'
ah, sorry. i thought you were referring to the whole of ben's essay.
i think he was extremely dedicated to it. there are myriad examples in ann wroe's 'being shelley'.
Oh, no! I haven't read Ben's essay yet.
I haven't read that book either, so I guess I need a lot more information about his life than I have at my disposal 🥰
'being shelley' is an excellent start - but no reason to dive in unless you're actually interested in the subject. :) you might still come away thinking he's a fatuous dandy.
I didn't think he was a fatuous dandy - not entirely, anyway. But I clearly don't know enough about his pre-Mary days, outside the Not Good treatment of women.
Have a read of "The Masque of Anarchy" written as a response to Peterloo
