Please keep Gaza in your thoughts whilst the mainstream media tries to gaslight, cover up and twist the truth.
Here's a link to the fundraiser for Gaza Soup Kitchen, a mutual aid, community run initiative providing food, learning and medical aid to local people in North Gaza. Even a couple of pounds (dollars/ euros) helps them provide their services. https://www.gofundme.com/f/Hot-meals-in-gaza-daily

We could really use some help. I've been sick for about a week now, and haven't had the spoons to post, but reaching the point now where I dont have a choice. We are out of money ($17.33 total to our names atm), and we have a lot of bills coming due, including $275.67 if we don't want our electricity disconnected on the 18th, $300 for our overdue income tax payment arrangement which was supposed to have been paid on the 8th, $168.84 for our water, $226.46 for our phones, another $567.83 at the start of next month for them to not take our car.

i think that's why scott crow used "Community Armed Self Defense" in the title. the book does cover the necessity of being in community with folks that you engage in mutual aid with or in defensive solidarity with.

you can do almost any care work in a community without developing a real horizontal relationship of solidarity. often this is what non-profits and NGOs do. but this is something to watch out for in any activism or organizing.

there is a higher power differential with community armed self defense so it makes sense that folks are reticent about replicating historical examples of machismo, paternalism, and authoritarianism.

#CommunityDefense #MutualAid

i'm working with a definition of community defense as discussed by scott crow in "Setting Sights: Histories and Reflections on Community Armed Self Defense".

it seems like people use the phrase "community defense" in ways that could just as easily be called "mutual aid".

we may even use the phrase differently in various contexts without referencing this broad nature.

these concepts are fairly intertwined so it makes sense that the cross-pollination leads to mixed messaging.

#CommunityDefense #MutualAid

community defense is not:

only the things you personally are comfortable or able to provide or discuss

no essentialism necessary

none of us can give a singular definition because it encompasses any possible activity that defends or keeps folks safe

much like mutual aid it's holistic in nature

humans need many things to thrive and survive

without a doubt, they do need a pulse to continue receiving care

#CommunityDefense #MutualAid

community defense is...

defending your community

by any means necessary

with any resources available

- food
- medical supplies/care
- social/mental health support
- technology
- tools for defense

#CommunityDefense #MutualAid

Great article encouraging (but not shaming) people who are disappointed in the recent election results to wear mask to help to look after the vulnerable people in the community.

I think some folks may be missing my point here.

If you are new to mutual aid and building (or joining) community, start with a local need.

One that you can do without any training or previous experience:

Like distributing food.
Like going with NAACP to a local townhall meeting.
Like escorting abortion patients if you're up for it.

That gets you plugged in. Lets you learn how these things go. Gets you listening and meeting folks. Lets you learn about other groups.

To be VERY CLEAR: Distributing food at a food pantry is an entrance point to fighting a national fascist movement.

If you are completely new, read Dean Spade's book "Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next)".

It's free in various formats here (including HTML, PDF, EPUB, etc): https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/dean-spade-mutual-aid

It's also available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and your local library.

Read it. It's a quick read.

Go join a group.

This isn't charity.

This is resiliency and resistance.

- Individual
- Individuals grouped locally
- Local groups bring immediate change in local town and surrounding areas
- Local groups communicate / coordinate for state & national action
- Coordinated national action (via local groups) brings change nationally

You can only start local. That's how this all works.

Find a group doing the following:
- Distributing shelf stable food and fresh produce
- Making and serving hot meals
- Peer to peer mental health
- Homeless / Houseless outreach & support (especially during winter right now)
- Civil rights advocacy & action (pick your group and cause)
- Education, Literacy, Library support
- Etc Et Al

These groups are already established. They have knowledge and experience. Plug in where they need you. Start with simple tasks. Listen, learn, meet people. Keep showing up on a regular schedule that you cab sustain. Don't worry about picking the right group immediately. Once you start with one group, you'll learn about others. Move to where you like after you get started.

These groups are coordinating. They are working together with other groups across town and with similar groups across the county.

Pitch in as you can. We need you. You need this. You can help right now. You can push back right now.

Push back.

(If you need help getting started, DM me with your city / town / closest town, and I'll help you search for a group to begin work with.)

I'm extremely thankful for everyone who has contributed to my mutual aid request, helping me escape abuse and arrive at my new sanctuary. I couldn't have left without you. I still need support, however. I've lost 20 pounds I couldn't afford to lose, so among other things I need to eat for complete restoration. I also need medicine, clothes, and other necessities to get my life back on track.

One specific person gave a lion's share of their time and money to help me escape. This individual believes wholeheartedly in mutual aid and helped me, trusting the community to pitch in with more support. They witnessed the abuse happen in real time when we spoke, and saw my situation was dire. I am forever thankful, not only for their help getting me out, but for their moral support, their belief in me, and most importantly, their friendship. I don't want to think about what could have happened if this person didn't come to my rescue.

Please help me pay them back and practice reciprocity.

The morning Hurricane Helene hit Asheville, members of our collective sat in the dark, listening to the howling wind and the crack of huge trees falling all around. When we emerged Friday evening to take stock, a cardboard sign on our co-op’s door read “Community meeting here, Saturday at 2pm. Let’s talk about how we can take care of each other + community.” That first autonomous act by an anonymous neighbor set the stage for the week, with Firestorm becoming a container for other people’s brilliant, beautiful, and generous self-organizing.

About forty people attended the first meeting. Nearly four hundred attended the next one. The gatherings, now a daily anchor, have generated a multitude of connections and volunteer powered projects. Before city officials had finished assessing the damage, community members were sharing supplies, doing wellness checks, and serving hot meals. Over the next few days, things became more organized. Anarchist arborists collected chainsaws and dispatched crews to clear roads for trapped residents; activists mobilized to build long term water distribution systems capable of delivering 6k gallons/day; bike punks offered free repair clinics; a farmer began driving regular water supply loops to Firestorm from a nearby spring; and an enthusiastic DIY-er set up a tent to distribute dry toilets made from affordable materials.

In the midst of this anarchic moment, Firestorm isn’t setting the agenda or directing anyone—we’re offering a space that welcomes independent initiative, we’re supporting the exchange of critical information, and we’re modeling a do-it-ourselves approach that’s responsive, experimental, and human-scale.

Yes, government and NGO aid is now flowing into the region—but the work of caring for one another continues to be done by neighbors, grassroots organizations, small businesses, and activists. It’s done voluntarily, with thousands of autonomous actions synchronized through a shared solidarity. For a brief moment, the logic of the capitalist market is suspended, care is given freely, and everyone contributes what they can.

It’s a strange paradox that the utopia we dream of becomes most visible in the dark.

UPDATE RE: MY ESCAPE FROM VIOLENT ABLEST PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABUSE

1/2

Good morning Mastodonians, emphasis on "good"! I have made my escape over the wall across enemy lines from abuse, and I am recovering in the resistance safe house. Translation for any "Neurotyps" out there: I've escaped my very abusive living situation and I'm finally in a place that feels like a home… like my home.

I'm waiting for someone to pinch me and wake me up because never in a thousand therapeutic escapist daydreams could I have imagined the wonderful things that have happened to me in many areas of my life in the past few weeks. I'm home in a healthy, happy, healing, nurturing, creative, neurodivergent place with a wonderfully accommodating person of like mind and spirit.

Believe it or not considering everywhere I've been, I now live in an area that I've never been before. I'm surrounded by nature's beauty outside my home, and beauty, peace, love, and sanctuary inside.

There are so many opportunities for me here, and I'm extremely excited to have not only a new creative partner, but a partner in OutOfExile_IDR efforts with the same fiery passion as I.

Among many other creative endeavors, we are also collaborating on music. This stellar individual has helped me to remember that despite having a limb difference disability (one functioning hand), I am still a highly skilled musician with decades of experience I thought I lost after my accident(s). As a result of the inspiration that comes from combining with this person, I'm teaching myself to play guitar again, left-handed.

And best of all, this person has a punctuation fetish. You've read my stuff, right? They keep my creative meanderings in check. What a perfect yin to my yang.

Also, I would rather work and earn than take handouts any day. If you need someone with decades of experience in machine learning or python programming, or know someone who does, let me know in a PM. I'm willing to work for cheap, especially if it helps me upskill with LLMs. (My lack of hands-on experience with LLMs in particular is why I am struggling.) I'm happy to work contracts, part time, pay by the job, pay by the hour, you name it. Make me an offer or ask me for a bid!

Again, ***please boost for reach.***

Thank you, Mastodon, for saving my car for another month and allowing me to get my electricity turned back on today. I'm still in a serious bind with my property taxes, and I'm behind 3 months on the car, but being able to look for and travel to a job sure does help!
