#TIL if the cops come and trash your home with battering rams, hose the place down with chemical weapons (tear gas), or start the place on fire, your #insurance won’t cover “acts of the government”. #LuigiMangione

Y’all, not only are people being arrested nonsensically for terrorism because the healthcare industry suddenly realized that if you kick a dog enough, eventually it will bite you, apparently they’ve decided that the public should not have facts or data that may lead them to understand how badly the insurance industry is managing the health of Americans.

ValuePenguin, a data collection and analysis site, is the origin of the viral chart showing denial rates of claims to insurance. They were first contacted by a company who wanted them to take data down, then when they didn’t, law enforcement showed up.

Just in case you were wondering who controls the cops...it’s the capital class.

Here’s a deep dive into how insurance companies hide and prevaricate their data, so that people don’t realize what crooks they all are.

Here’s the VP link for the chart and their notes about data takedown:

#BrianThompson’s a hero, huh? Yeah, gotcha.

#UnitedHealth Is Strategically Limiting Access to Critical Treatment for Kids With #Autism.

Leaked internal documents show that the #insurance giant is culling providers of applied behavior analysis from its network and scrutinizing the medical necessity of #therapy. Advocates say the company’s strategy may be illegal. https://www.propublica.org/article/unitedhealthcare-insurance-autism-denials-applied-behavior-analysis-medicaid #health #medicine #healthcare #LuigiMangione

"Navigating The American Healthcare System" - South Park

This would be funny but it's a pretty accurate description of how private #HealthInsurance works in the US today.

The oldest trick in the book... make people "stand in line" long enough and they'll drop out or just go away. I used to tell my Medical Students "Insurance Companies are in the business of denying care."

I was once put on hold for 40 minutes only to have the "medical director" read my own chart back to me. The denial was reversed based on documentation they already had... the entire exercise was INTENDED to waste my time!

Americans are furious over health care. Is this an Occupy Wall Street moment?

@npr reports: "It's been a week since UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan. That shocking, targeted killing has also sparked a reckoning over the business he ran, in a country that has the most expensive health care in the world."

A recorded voice message to a friend after a hike through Japan's mountain ranges would be one of Luigi Mangione's last communications before he abruptly cut ties with a wide range of friends and family, who set out on a desperate hunt to track him down. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/12/13/world/crime-legal/unitedhealth-shooting-new-details/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #crimelegal #unitedhealthcare #insurance #us #japan

Since Luigi Mangione was charged with murder for gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, more than a thousand donations have poured into an online fundraiser for his legal defense, with messages supporting him and even celebrating the crime. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/12/12/world/crime-legal/luigi-mangione-donations-unitedhealth/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #crimelegal #unitedhealthcare #insurance #us

Yet another "this is objectively bad BUT" type posts, sorry.

I get the discussions about how people should have empathy (broadly) in regards to the #CEO murder.

But I'd argue they DO. It's actually competing empathy (like the wolves inside). We have decades of being fucked by health insurers - both direct and indirect experience - built up and weighed in the instantaneous reaction against the idea of being murdered in the street.

So it's complicated.

While your health is at stake, #insurance cos are playing a game of “denials for dollars 💵”…& they don’t like to lose.

Why do we allow them to dictate what happens to our own health? It’s highway robbery—patients suffer & die bc of denials of care. Insist on change.

TIL Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases)

"Following the murder of its CEO on Wednesday morning, United Healthcare removed a page from its website listing the rest of its executive leadership, and several other health insurance companies have done the same, hiding the names and photos of their executives from easy public access.

As of Thursday, United Healthcare’s “about us” page that listed leadership, including slain CEO Brian Thompson, redirects to the company’s homepage. An archive of the page shows that it was still up as of Wednesday morning, but is redirecting at the time of writing and isn’t directly accessible from Google search or the site’s navigation buttons.

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, which Thursday said it would walk back changes announced this week that would charge patients for anesthesia during procedures that went longer than estimated, now redirects its own leadership page to its “about us” page. Originally that page showed leadership, including President and CEO Kim Keck, Executive Vice President and CFO Christina Fisher, and 23 more executives as of earlier this year according to archives of the page, but is now inaccessible."

This is the first mainstream story I've seen that covers people's reactions and feelings about the medical insurance industry, instead of the shooting and the manhunt.

It still calls the shooting "shocking", despite the fact that nobody I know has expressed any shock at all over it, more like sage nods and "Shoulda seen that coming" expressions. (I wonder what manufacturing consent would look like? 🤔) But it's a start.

Here's my experience with Medicare, which is single-payer health insurance in the US for seniors and disabled people: I got diagnosed with a condition that has expensive immunotherapy on the Medicare formulary as the first-line treatment.

My doc prescribed it and Medicare pays for it.

That's it.

The propaganda against Medicare is so strong because UHC and the like make tens of billions of dollars denying care like mine.

The Hidden Fee Costing #Doctors Millions Every Year

A powerful #lobbyist convinced a federal agency that doctors can be forced to pay fees on money that #health insurers owe them.

Big companies rake in profits while doctors are saddled with yet another cost in a burdensome #HealthCare system.
