KSL (Utah): Rise in Tesla vandalism drives insurance premiums, frustrating owners

"...Insurify Data Analyst Matt Brannon said this recent string of Tesla-targeted vandalism could fuel higher insurance prices.

“If insurers can prove that they are losing more money on these vandalism claims on Teslas, then some drivers could see their premiums go up,” Brannon said...."

DOGE Is Making It Harder to Track Extreme Weather. What Could Go Wrong?

"These cuts threaten your budget, too. #Insurance companies rely heavily on #data gathered by #NOAA and the #US Geological Survey to assess wildfire, flood, wind and other risks. Some firms are warning that any interruption in data availability could drive insurance premiums for customers even higher."

Human rights and environmental violations throughout Australian supply chains ?
Creating a mandatory human rights due diligence regime for Australian companies

"We analysed the human rights commitments of 25 of the top companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), including some of our largest banks and mining companies."

"We found Australian companies have a long way to go in “knowing and showing” a commitment to respect human rights, suggesting an urgent need for reform...It is clear from our research that many large Australian companies are not operating in line with international standards."

"One response could be for Australia to follow the European Union’s lead and create a mandatory human rights due diligence regime. Australian companies must take proactive steps to comply with international standards. Our findings suggest the government should enact a stronger and broader mandatory human rights due diligence law covering all human rights. "

Insurers are not willing to provide liquor liability in SC, driving up rates and forcing small businesses to close. Insurance companies were asked: What is different about South Carolina compared to other states?

For decades now studies had shown that nearly 30% of administrative costs in a US hospital are related to accounting. The NHS had nearly no such thing, government employees providing a service.

Countries like Germany, Canada, and all those providing #insurance were in a gray area between the #NHS and the US. That is huge overhead of accounting and climbing costs of pharma/bio/med products.

The 2 models between socialized health care and insurance are broadly misunderstood.

Marketplace NPR program had a helpful segment on today, with the CA Insurance commish. Except for the part about googling for the phone number, there was some helpful info in there.

The "change my mind" meme (originally with Steven Crowder) has been updated for 2025.

Megan Fan Munce: CEO of California’s third-largest home insurer says state will still be insurable after L.A. fires

"The ongoing Los Angeles wildfires are the pinnacle in a series of bad blazes that have plunged the state’s insurance market into a state of deep crisis.

But the CEO and president of the third largest home #insurance company in the state believes that #California, and its wildfires, are still insurable."

The insurance industry is just not making money, according to the Insurance Information Institute. In 2023, insurers paid out $1.11 in claims for every dollar they made in premiums. This year is expected to be the fifth year in a row with underwriting losses, the institute determined.

When these pressures mount to an intolerable level, insurers stop writing new policies, as companies have done in California, Florida and elsewhere.

"This article uses the case study of an insurance product linked to a health and wellbeing program—the Vitality scheme—as a lens to examine the limited regulation of collection and use of non-personal (de-identified/anonymised) information and the impacts it has on individuals, as well as society at large. Vitality is an incentive-based engagement program that mobilises online assessment tools, preventive health screening, and physical activity and wellness tracking through smart fitness technologies and apps. Vitality then uses the data generated through these activities, mainly in an aggregated, non-personal form, to make projections about changes in behaviour and future health outcomes, aiming at reducing risk in the context of health, life, and other insurance products. Non-personal data has been traditionally excluded from the scope of legal protections, and in particular privacy and data regimes, as it is thought not to contain information about specific, identifiable people, and thus its potential to affect individuals in any meaningful way has been understood to be minimal. However, digitalisation and ensuing ubiquitous data collection are proving these traditional assumptions wrong. We show how the response of the legal systems is limited in relation to non-personal information collection and use, and we argue that irrespective of the (possibly) beneficial nature of insurance innovation, the current lack of comprehensive regulation of non-personal data use potentially leads to individual, collective and societal data harms, as the example of the Vitality scheme illustrates."

Insurers’ denial rates are a critical measure of how reliably they pay for customers’ care. But they remain mostly secret to the public.

Federal and state regulators have done little to change that.

The problem with this article is that the #media hasn't been very empathetic here. This isn't a case of "white man kills family" and the photo is him jet skiing.

The media has actually been trying pretty hard to shame everyone who is being empathetic to him.

The empathy is coming from social media.

It's not primarily #TheAdjuster himself that the #left needs to build #solidarity with. It's the people who see what The Adjuster did and why, and are starting to develop #seeds of #ClassConsciousness as it hits a nerve in their own lives. Huge swaths of the #USA are more openly pissed at #healthcare #insurance #CEOs than ever before, and for good reason. That's a critical #potentiality.

For the record, though, I'm not 100% convinced it was #LuigiMangione.

When an insurance company is deciding whether to pay for your medical treatment, it generates a file, which should contain all records associated with your case, including documents explaining why the claim was denied.

You have a right to see this file.
