Does anyone remember the aftermath of the second term of the Bush/Cheney presidency? The time to start preparing has already passed. Plan now.

I predict #unemployment claims begin to rise in the second quarter, snowballing into the summer as the #Trump administration continues their flailing #blitzkrieg, drunk on the false perception of irresponsible power.

The #JobMarket Is Frozen
#Unemployment is low, but workers aren’t quitting and businesses aren’t #hiring. What’s going on?
The answer is that two seemingly incompatible things are happening in the #job market at the same time. Even as the unemployment rate has hovered around 4 percent for more than three years, the pace of hiring has slowed to levels last seen shortly after the #GreatRecession, when the unemployment rate was nearly twice as high.

Real freedom exists only where exploitation has been destroyed, where there is no oppression of some people by others, where there is no unemployment and poverty, where man does not tremble for the fact that tomorrow he may lose his job, his home, his bread.

The most oppressive regimes are those where people are deprived of their basic needs, such as food to eat, housing to live in, or access to healthcare when they get sick.

People in capitalist societies live in daily terror that losing their job could leave them penniless on the streets or unable to retire with dignity. True freedom is not the bourgeois 'liberty' to starve, it's about ensuring that basic needs are protected as inherent human rights.

Ruth Patrick on a real life experiment about conditionality & unemployment benefits:

'At the height of the pandemic, the government temporarily paused welfare conditionality, meaning that no one was at risk from a benefit sanction for failing to look for work. During this time, claimants continued to seek work at just the same level as when conditionality was in place, powerful evidence that intensive conditionality is an unnecessary evil'!

The #Fed has satisfied its dual mandate of keeping #inflation & #unemployment low.

But the arrival at that finish line now coincides w/ #Trump’s promise to enact an entirely new #fiscal & #economic regime. While analysts are uncertain about how exactly that could materialize & how severe it might be, #markets have responded by selling off #bonds in anticipation of a return to inflation from a combo of Trump’s pro-*growth* & #combative #trade policies.
